No-Sew Fleece: Simple Pom-Pom Hat

Fleece-No-Sew-Pompom-hatIsn’t this hat cute? And guess how long it took me to make it? Oh about ten minutes, really! How’s that for a quick last minute gift, or even a fun holiday crafting activity. Who wouldn’t love a new cozy hat?

Can’t blame me for trying to be helpful. And if you’d like to make a hat/scarf set, this hat would look great with the delicate ruffled scarf or the color block scarf! I agree, this hat does look a bit on the feminine side,
so for boys one should cut the ties off closer to the knot so that they don’t look like bows, and/or simply turn the hat inside out after tying.

You’ll Need:

  • fleece
  • masking tape if you want to be really accurate
  • good scissors

How-To:

  1. Cut a piece of fleece that measures roughly 35cm (14 inches)high with a length that equals the circumference of the recipient’s head plus 15cm (2 inches) for the fringe and another 3cm (1.25″) for comfort factor.(You don’t want this hat to be too snug because then the knots in the brim could be annoying.)
  2. Place piece of masking tape along the vertical edges, leaving a space of 7.5cm (3 inches) between the tape and the edge.
  3. Mark off increments of roughly 1.5 cm (2/3 inch) on the tape, and cut fringe according to these marks. (I have to confess, I skipped this part and just eyeballed my fringe, which is probably why the bows are not all the same!)
  4. Bring two fringed edges together and tie small double knots between corresponding pieces from each edge
  5. Fold bottom of hat up twice to form a brim. (For boys you may want to turn hat inside out at this point.)
  6. Decide on the height of the hat, and using a piece of fleece or ribbon, gather the top of the hat and tie tightly
  7. Un-do any knots above this tie, and cut off fringe.
  8. Make vertical cuts in top portion of hat to create the look of a pom-pom. Trim if necessary.
  9. Ever dreamed you could make something so cute so quickly?

I was at the Real Simple web site this morning and they had an idea that really belongs at your plarn post. Is that the right word for plastic yarn? eich omrim “plastic yarn”? Anyway, maybe you can do the magic and put this comment where it belongs: 1. Triple wrap a gift with 3 different colored plastic bags. 2. Knot the handles. 3. Cut the loops. 4. Fan them out. 5. Admire.

What a cute-looking pom-pom hat! The fleece handles this design and color so well – love the baby-blue bow attached to the top… and best of all – no sewing (that means I can do it!)!

Love this craft. These were so easy our girl scout troop made one for themselves and one for the cancer center to give to patients there. Had so much fun and the patients really appreciated them.

Thats so wonderful! Thank you so so much for letting me know! i have a little blog project on the back burner which would encourage acts of kindness through crafting,
so Im so very happy to hear that youve done just that with your troup! If you ever need any other suggestions just ask!

Did i misunderstand the direction? The 3 inches you measure for the fringe takes away from the size of the hat and makes it too tight.

I Pinned this a few months ago, and just now finished my first hat! It took me all of, I don’t know, 20 minutes? Awesome! I decided on making baby hats to go with the baby no-sew blankets I’ve been making for baby showers. Great addition! Thanks for the simple directions. One question, how do I get the brim to stay up? It keeps wanting to unfold.

  29. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Hannah, great to hear from you, and so glad youre making hats! Honestly, I made this hat over three years ago, so I really dont recall that I had a problem with the brim unfolding,
but how about just making a few stitches from the inside to secure the brim where you wouldnt see it? Also, Im not sure but maybe its related to how tight youre knots are….if they are pulling the fabric too much I can imagine that could cause it to unfold. All the best!

  30. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Hannah, I made this project almost three years ago, so I really dont remember if I had a similar problem, but Id say stitch it down

Thank you for the ideas!! My daisy and brow ie girl scouts will be making the hats and my junior girl scours will be making the scarves to wear in our Christmas parade next week. Love the idea. My daughter made a similar scarf few years ago but was more like making a blanket which used more material so I loved these ideas!! Thanks again!

In step #1, you state 15 cm (2 inches), but 15 cm does not equal 2 inches, so which number is correct?
Pictures or a you tube video demo would be so helpful!
    Thank you.

  33. Sara Rivka Avatar

Thanks so much for catching that error! The 15cm is correct, since 2 inches for the fringe would be a little difficult. Wish I had time for photo tutorials and videos to help everyone, but Id need a staff for that! all the best!

I must be doing something wrong! I followed the above directions, and just have a very small fleece blanket! Are you supposed to cut all four sides? I think something is missing in the directions?
