You Really Can Make An Impressive Shavuos/Birthday Cake!

Shavuos Har Sinai Birthday Cake Silo

Yes, really! Though I will admit to being a serious crafter, an accomplished baker I am not! As I’ve said before I do aspire to those picture perfect fondant cakes, who wouldn’t, but I’m just not there yet! So I’ve come up with a little visual trick that I wanted to share with you: it’s not the cake that matters, it’s what you put around the cake! This cake on it’s own would be cute, but set in a field of lollipop flowers, it’s quite a statement, and with some popsicle stick people for fun, well no one is even looking at the cake or at your icing job, which if it’s like mine is far from perfect!

Yes, of course this is more work than just a cake, but isn’t it worth it to please your little darlings? I think so, and I’m definitely willing to loose sleep to help create precious birthday memories for my children.

And of course this idea could be used with just about any theme: place a large number on top, a little train track, some plastic toys….got it?

You’ll Need: For the Cake

  • A basic chocolate cake baked in a bundt pan
  • A basic chocolate cake baked in a round pan slightly larger in diameter than the bundt pan
  • Two chocolate cake cupcakes to fill hole in middle of bundt cake
  • A large tray
  • Licorice or sour sticks candy plus candy coated chocolate candies
  • A piece of 1″ deep styrofoam roughly the size of your tray
  • Colored popsicle sticks (actually tongue depressors) cut in half and permanent marker for face details

You’ll Need: For the Lollipop Flowers:

  • Lollipops
  • Two sizes of paper flowers, I cut mine with two scalloped circle punches
  • Egg cups, painted and cut into four petaled flowers
  • Hot glue, a dab to secure flowers to lollipop sticks

How To:

I just finished writing a whole explanation and lost it since my computer is misbehaving. I really don’t have the brain power to write it again, so I hope it’s fairly self explanatory! I cut the stryofoam into pieces, a round base for the cake, and two crescent-moon shaped pieces for the lollipops.
