How To Crochet A Granny Hexigon Baby Surprise Sweater!

Crocheted Baby Surprise Hex Pink Granny

You too can make the sweetest and easiest baby sweater on earth! I was so excited to discover this pattern that I ran to the store, bought some yarn and started crocheting! Three sweaters later I still have the stomach to make more. And for me to make multiples of anything is quite rare, so this means it really is fun and relatively quick.

The pattern that I used can be found here, though as you’ll notice my version looks a bit different as I did not follow the pattern as far as cuffs and trim. I’ll add that info to this post shortly, or simply take a look at the photos, and you can probably figure it out, or make up your own version! Also the choice of yarn makes a big difference in the outcome, and since I wanted to make sweaters that could be worn in the summer I choose cotton and I love the results.

Yarn and Hook Size Info:

Following the pattern in the link above, a F/3.75mm size hook and 100% cotton 50g/125m  (fingerling, I believe) yarn, the resulting sweater is newborn to about 3 months size, but if it looks too small, or you happen to know that the baby you’re making it for is bigger than average, so just add some more rows! I was a bit wary of crocheting with such fine yarn, (that’s the only cotton I could find around here) since I usually go for chunky and quick, but for a project this small it really wasn’t so tedious, and the resulting sweater is also light weight.

You’ll need two balls of the body color and one ball for the trim, or if you’d like to make the colorful pink version above, so you’ll need just one ball of each of the colors.

Basic Construction:

The link I provided gives good instructions, but I did want to share with you the “surprise” element of this sweater. You basically crochet a very ruffled hexigon and then it gets folded into a shape that is half of a sweater!

Isn’t that nifty? That means there’s only one seam up the back, and two more for the shoulders. And to increase the size of the sweater you just make bigger hexigons by adding rows! Enjoy and feel free to ask me any questions!

OMG OMG OMG!!! I am so sad that I have a pillow I am working on now… I want to make this now! I love your version, I had seen the pattern before and kind of thought it looked funny, but I didn’t see past the original to see what you did! I am going to have to hurry this pillow along and get started! To the Sunroom (aka my yarn stash)

Oh my word! That is SO SO CUTE! And does look easy… I will have to make one for Pip Squeak (she is now 15 months, but guess I just make it bigger???!)
    Thank you
    Maggy

  18. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Maggy, so glad you went to look at the pattern! Yes, since youre making it for your own child, just keep going around the hexigon (add more rows) until its the size you need.
Also, you can really make it in any yarn and hook size and just play it by ear as far as how many rows to make.
    All the best!

Sooooo, love this sweater….but, do you think it’s possible to make it big for an adult???

  20. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Bonnie, Good question! One could theoretically, though some adjustments, namely decreases of some of some kind would have to be made. I have a half finished sweater made this way for my 9 year old daughter, and using this pattern and many more rounds, the sleeves become very bell shaped. With the sweater Ive made Ill probably run ribbon through the sleeves to gather them a bit. If you find a pattern like this revised for adult sizes, do me know!

    Dear Crochet Pals;
Please note the web address for a video i.e. YouTube demo. I came across one on the net but did not mark it. I am having a bit of a challenge visualizing the construction. I tried to work it out with tape and paper towels but it still did not click.
    Thanks, Leah

  29. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Leah, once you crochet the hexagons and play with then a bit theyll fall into place in a way that the paper towels cannot, as the crocheted pieces are not flat hexigons!
