Slice Of Life: Fresh Almonds By The Bag Full!

Slice Of Life; Fresh Almonds From The Farm

While some of you are picking cherries and strawberries, one of our local summer harvests happens to be almonds! And when my husband sees farmers selling these green mesh bag-fulls by the side of the road, he just goes crazy! Why? Eating these freshly picked untouched nuts is something he remembers from his childhood, and another one of his family’s food traditions I’d never heard of! Have you?

I have to admit, they’re actually quite interesting, and of course reminiscent of almond milk type drinks. I’m happy to say this this year my husband only brought home one bag, as they go bad quickly, even before I can figure out what to do with them! In case you are wondering, the hard shell that you recognize in an Almond is actually inside the fleshy/fuzzy green exterior! Any interesting summer (winter for those of you down under) harvests in your neck of the woods?

Thanks for your comment and your helpfulness. It’s a real privilege to participate to your linking party. This morning I’ve seen, on Google, some pictures of your land which I love so much and wish to visit in a close future. I will participate to your linking party again and compliments for your blog and creations you propose.
These almonds are very interesting, the ones I know ripen in August but they have a woody and brown shell.
My daughter Elisabetta makes an ice-cream with almonds which is called “torroncino”.
    A big hug, Rosi.

    How lovely 🙂
My aunt has a Walnut Tree in her garden and she used to have a Cob Nut tree too… I always loved walking around the garden, collecting them in a basket and laying them out to dry all over the house! I also remember accidentally staining my fingernails brown by breaking one of the soft green skins over the shell of a Walnut to smell it and getting it under my nails – it just wouldn’t wash off at all!

Here they sell pine nuts on the sides of the roads. Oh, how I love the soft texture of this nut and it’s faint hint of pine taste! Of course, they are even better toasted in the oven for a bit. My, now I am craving these badly.
