Make Festive Holiday Decorations With Eggshells!

Egg Shell Art Holiday Decorations
If you weren’t convinced by yesterday’s post about crafting with eggshells here, so hopefully this will do it! How else can one create such a beautiful mosaic, stained glass-like effect with very little effort? Got it?

I think these “starry night” winter decorations would be great for Chanukah—I’m thinking of a whole bunch in different sizes covering a window above the Chanukiah (menorah), or hanging in a doorway. Come to think of it, they’d look great on your front door too….and I just realized that this might be great with golden eggshells too, for a really elegant look! (Anyone have a hen that lays golden eggs? That might come in handy right about now.)

Oh and if you’re wondering if it’s a bit early to start thinking about Chanukah, well, let me assure you, it’s not. Plus, we don’t do Halloween in the Holy Land, and there’s no big fall color either, nor any pumpkins patches, nor turkey day, sooooooo we might as well look forward to the next holiday, which starts on the night of December 1st, not so far off! Infact, Yikes! I’d better get cracking!

You’ll Need:

  • eggshell decoupaged paper, instructions here
  • cardboard, like a cereal box, which is what I used
  • a hot glue gun, or white glue for the kids…..

How To:

  1. Draw a simple petal shape on a piece of cardboard, and cut it out.
  2. On the back of your eggshell decoupage, use this petal shape as a template to trace as many shapes as you’ll need. On black paper you can use a regular pencil, or better yet a white or lightly colored pencil for tracing your shape.
  3. Cut out the individual petals and arrange on a piece of cardboard in the desired arrangement.
  4. Affix the petals with glue, hot glue being the easiest but not for young children.
  5. Now cut out the entire shape leaving a small border all around.
  6. Punch a hole in the top petal and hang with a beautiful ribbon or use a needle to attach a piece of fishing line for hanging.

P.S: Did it occur to you why eggshell art is perfect for Chanukah? I’ll be happy to tell you: the actual making of the art is the story of Chanukah…..reclaiming something that was destroyed and making it beautiful and special again!

Thanks Michele! I have to say, the eggshell thing might be addictive, I made a dinner tonight that I knew would need lots of eggs just to get some more shells!

These look so fun, I am going to have to try this.
Tangent –back in my art school days, they taught us oil painting techniques by painting on eggshells (forces you to be delicate with the brush and concentrate on the process not the product)…now I see this and wish I had kept those old scrap eggs!

This is wonderful! What a fantastic Idea! I’m so thankful I found your website. We are new to the Jewish faith and with Chanukah coming up my goal is to be able to have our congregation at our home to celebrate. I can’t wait to use some of your crafts and to read more!
