A Family Friendly Hanukkah Craft: Decorating Styrofoam Shapes With Sequins

Hanukkah Sequined Shapes From Afar

Look what we found in the attic! Yes, truly, these decorations are at least 7 years old….I made them with my older boys way back when, and they’re still looking good. I can’t say that I’d make something that looks even remotely similar to this now, using store bought foam Hanukkah shapes, but they’re sweet and festive and a nice reminder to the teenagers that yes, I did crafts with them too!

Most kids love applying sequins to foam shapes using plastic sequin pins, and it’s actually a great craft for developing motor coordination. This craft is very popular here in Israel, but finding the supplies, even the plastic sequin pins might be a bit difficult for those of you in the United States and elsewhere.

You’ll Need:

  • foam Hanukkah shapes
  • sequins and sequin pins
  • napkins for decoupage (optional)
  • acrylic craft paint
  • glitter glue or “tulip” which is glittered dimensional fabric paint
  • beads and fishing line

How To: Paint shapes, apply napkiin decoupage if desired, set aside to dry. Embellish with sequins/sequin pins, glitter glue, small plastic mosaic tiles etc. Make hole in foam shaped with a needle and string together with some wooden beads. Hang and enjoy and store in the attic to bring out for years to come!

    Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you!
These styrofoam decorations will be perfect to do with my 10 and 9 yr old grandsons.
All of the holiday decorations of my children and older grandchildren were lost in the last move.
Using the styrofoam gives dimension to the artwork and will give me a wonderful wall hanging around which we can string some small lights.
The colors as they appear on my laptop are lovely!
May your many holidays throughout the year be well-blessed with beautiful memories to cheer your twilight years.

Thanks so much Shi-loh, one of the major pluses of this blog is that I have an amazing record of all the things weve done…..in the future my children can reference their childhoods and will be able to share all the little details with their kids. It also help me to be sad when artwork doesnt hold up or gets damaged. all the best!
