Handmade Holiday: Crochet Striped Pouches For Gelt and Gifts!

Crocheted gelt-gift pouch for Hannukah

If you happen to be paying attention I guess you’ve already figured out that I got bitten by the crochet bug! Sorry about that for those of you who don’t crochet, but maybe you’ll learn and join in on the fun? You are really missing out, believe me! And it’s definitely a lot easier than learning to ski or play the piano I’d say….plus you can practice any time….in the car, in line, during a commute on the train…..and then, instead of practicing during those times, you’ll eventually be able to crochet something!

This little Chanukah gelt or gift bag is a great project for beginners, or a nice and quick project for those more experienced with crochet. You could make it with a shoulder strap as well…it’s the perfect size for a cell phone and keys. And if you happen to sew, so you could spend just a bit more time and make a wonderful lining, which will bring this small gift over the top!

You’ll Need:

  • Lion Brand Cotton in five colors, available in Israel at livyahyarn.com
  • Appropriately sized crochet hook, like a J or H
  • Ribbon or cord to use as a drawstring, or crochet one!

How To:
This is a simple little pattern that I made up myself, and you can find it right here. The dimensions of the finished bag, lying flat are roughly 5″ wide by 7″ long. If you’ll be giving this as a gift to someone who might want to use it as a little purse, I’d recommend measuring the height as you go, and make the drawstring row accordingly, such that there will be ample room for a cellphone to fit in nicely….because you’re nice like that, and of course you do want your gift to be practical!

ps: I was just thinking how great a little pouch like this would look crocheted in your best friend’s favorite color, with a contrasting or even patterned ribbon…..I’d love one in aqua and one in orange, thanks!

    why do you buy livyahyarn.com
    ?
a cotton ball cost 9-10 nis in ordinary shop,
why pay 20+ for the same thing?
Is there any difference beside the brand :-)?

Hi Yuli, Glad you thought to ask! The 9-10 shekel cotton yarn that I have purchased and used for many projects is very fine and not heavy enough weight for many projects. And using two strands together just doesnt achieve the same effect. The Lion Brand yarn has a much softer feel to it, the 9-10 shekel cotton is mercerized or something, and it seems to be bit shiny, not the natural texture of the Lion Brand. Yes, the Lion brand is costly, but there was great sale a while back…So it just depends on how much youre willing to spend to make something beautiful! all the best! Love to see what youve been crocheting, send me photos!

CUTE!! Love the stripes. And this is a great ‘get-you-started-and-feeling-satisfied-about-crocheting’ type of project. Come to think of it, second to a pot holder, I’m pretty sure a gelt bag was the first thing I ever crocheted! Came out lumpy, but it was well loved 🙂
Memories….like the corners of my mind…

Hi Peaches, thanks so much…..so happy that you know how to crochet….so you probably cant crochet old halloween masks, or straws, but you can crochet just about anything else,
and there are giant crochet hooks on the market…..just to get your gears turning…..xoxoxoSara

I LOVE this project! I think I may make one or two for my nephews, “boy” colors, with a shoelace for a tie. I learned to crochet just a few years ago by following steps on the internet and I’m hooked on it, always looking for great projects to make.
    Thanks!

What a fun project. Will stuff with some gelt, dreidels and “Yenta Bands” that my daughter picked up (a Jewish version of Silly Bandz that the kids are loving lately.)
    Thanks for the “how-to”!
