A Simple & Sweet Crocheted Baby Sweater: The Granny Hex Goes Chunky!

Crocheted Baby Chunky Granny Hex Sweater

Remember the crocheted granny hexigon baby sweater that I introduced last summer in beautiful cotton colors? Well here is that same baby sweater done in chunky yarn, for a winter weight garment that can be worn as a coat in the early Spring. I can’t say enough times how amazing this pattern is, especially for those (like me) who either don’t like the idea of crocheting sleeves separately, or for those who are newbies to crochet but are ready to tackle a simple garment. Oh, and I almost forgot, this is also great for those of us who love to crochet but really don’t have the time to invest in a project that requires a huge time commitment. As far as sweaters go, this is quick—take my word for it, this is the fourth one I’ve made. I’d never make more than one of something that I couldn’t whip up!

You can find the basic pattern for this sweater here. Follow the pattern to create the basic body shape, and then if you like what I’ve done, follow my instructions for the trim. Which I’ll be posting here shortly. (Sorry, gotta go make a huge batch of challah rolls for a sheva brachas (festive meal after the wedding, done for seven days) that we’re making in the neighborhood for a new bride and groom.)

Oops almost forgot, you can crochet a winter weight version in either chunky weight yarn, or if you like the look of this sweater, do what I did and crochet with two strands of sport weight yarn. I combined light blue and the darker blue that you can see in the hat. I love this technique — how about combining orange and magenta? Beige and white? Pink and creme?

And the hat? I’ll post the pattern for that separately, so stay tuned. And as always, if you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer them if I can! Just leave me a comment or contact me by email.

How can i use the pattern link for a weight 6 – super bulky yarn…. I want to make it for my newborn Please can u tell me how I should start this pattern for a new born… I have a N hook… (9mm) which i used to make a beanie with the same yarn… I now wanna make a matching sweater…. please guide..

Hi, Just follow the pattern and stop making the rounds when the folded piece seems to be the right size. Youll just have to play it by ear and see whether youll really need to make the sweater more like 6 months size for it to work…..in any case its pretty quick to try crocheting half of the sweater to see if the yarn and hook size will work…..all the best!

Hi Joan, so exciting that youre taking up crocheting, every effort is well worth it as crocheting is just so satisfying and one can make so many wonderful things. To add a new color I tie off at the end of a row and start a new color. I gave this sweeater as a gift so dont have it to refer to, but the green trim is simply a row of single crochet and then two rows of double crochet. And all the best with the sweater, you can do it!

Hi. Thanks for posting this pattern, I love the colours!
Just wanted to ask… What is the age range for this baby hat? I’d like to crochet a hat for either newborn or 0-3 months. The hook I have is a 4mm and the yarn is DK which I have been told is the right combination. I’m totally new to crochet but have done double knitting before.
    Once again, thank you!

Hi Connie, if you are new to crochet, as far as hats are concerned there are many basic beanie patterns (for free) that give you instructions for all the sizes, and you can also google dimensions for baby hats, there are charts that will tell you what dimensions the hat needs to be for what size. all the best!

hello, i want to thank you for this sweater pattern. i’ve been looking for one that i could use baby blanket yarn with, and a friend from another site suggested yours.
i’m using ‘Bernat Baby Blanket’ super bulky yarn with a size N hook. i only had to do 5 rounds after the initial circle for a 3-6 month size. now if i could only sew the halves together…lol i just can’t figure out how i need to do this. your photo looks great, but i can’t differentiate between the two sides. it looks like it was done all in one piece. is it possible you have a sample on hand that uses contrasting color?

ooops…just for clarification…my comment above is for ‘A Simple & Sweet Crocheted Baby Sweater: The Granny Hex Goes Chunky!’.

Hi Cheri, Wish I could be more helpful, but dont have anything on hand to photograph….just review my directions and go for it, if it makes it easier maybe pin the sweater together first such that the chains or braids that you see at the end of both pieces lies face to face. You can also google sewing together crochet pieces and Im sure you can find lots of instructions, as well as if you google attaching granny squares all the best!
