Vacation Crafts….Fun With Sidewalk Chalk

Vacation Crafts- Sidewalk Chalk Art

What are vacation crafts exactly? My definition of vacation crafts would be crafts or activities that are easy to transport, require minimal setup and can be enjoyed by a range of ages without adult supervision, such that the adults can catch up with the relatives they’re visiting, or have a little bit of down time themselves. With summer vacation just around the corner for many, now is a great time to start planning some fun summer craft acitivities for the kids, and I think that sidewalk chalk is a great one! (Though do check with those you may be visiting to make sure it’s okay with them.)

And while the kids are out there in their pyjamas and the sun is overhead, (which in case you’re paying attention means that it’s at least noon and they’re still in their pyjamas?) so why not have some fun with silhouettes? And come to think of it, it would also be fun to trace shadows with chalk for the starting point of a fun sidewalk chalk activity, don’t you think?

this made me smile 🙂 we recently traced our shadows outside, and it was a great activity. for one of the shadows my daughter sat on her bike, which made for a cool drawing. you could also document the movement of the sun by drawing shadows of the same object throughout the day!

Oh, and did you know you can easily make your own chalk by mixing plaster with foodcoloring, or the little tablets you use for coloring easter eggs, and water, of course, by pouring it into toilet paper rolls and letting it sit overnight? You could even make rainbow chalk!

Do you ever do the salt projects with sidewalk chalk?
This is my most favorite activity with kids of all ages.
All you need is salt, sidewalk chalk, plastic teaspoons, plastic bowls and glass jars. You can use baby food jars or any wide mouth jars.
Start with filling the bowls halfway up with salt. Then give each child a colored chalk and have them stir till they get the desired color. Do this till you have at least 5 colors. Then, give each child a jar and a spoon. Let them spoon the salt into their jars in layers. There are two rules only.
The first is DO NOT SHAKE.
The second is.. wait a day and then add salt to the jar as it will compact. You don’t want a space in there because the salt will move and designs will be lost.
Even 2 year olds can do this project. Everyone loves it.
You can decorate the tops if you like also. I usually cut out a circle and let them glue it on and decorate it. Makes great art.. and paperweights.
