Crocheted T-Shirt Yarn Rug

Crocheted Rug From T-Shirt Yarn

You can crochet with yarn made from old t-shirts, and making a little rug from t-shirt yarn is a great way to start! Okay, I have to admit, this rug is so little that I had wanted to add to it before sharing it with you, but there’s no time like the present. So grab some of those old t-shirts, or thrift some, and get started….. crocheting with recycled materials is so much fun!

You’ll Need:

How To:

Just a few words of advice. Do try to use t-shirts of the same weight and yarn of the same width. Do not use t-shirts that are actually ribbed, as some of the undershirts I cut up were, unknown to me. I got into some problems with this rug and had to tear a whole bunch out due to differences in yarn weight which then made my rug look very very wonky….is that a word? (And that is why my rug is so small, alack alas….)

Also, I do love the stripes, but keeping the rug square with even edges is quite a challenge……if you’re a perfectionist you may want to try crocheting a round rug first.

And by the way, if you don’t crochet check out my fun woven placemats with t-shirt yarn or even make a latch-hook rug with t-shirt yarn, which I’d love to try someday too! Enjoy!

I was just thinking about doing this yesterday! How many shirts did you use? Is it all single crochet?

Thanks so much, that was something that had to do with the shirts I found! all the best!

Great! All single crochet, and not sure how many shirts because it really depends on the size of the shirt. Only XL and larger really give a nice amount of yarn. all the best!

Yes, wonky is a word. We use it frequently here in Australia!

I absolutley love your ideas. They are so creative. I venture to say my daughter has over 50 t-shirts. I’m going to have to give this a try.

I have seen this one to my auntie but it seems hard though. How did you do it by color? It looks better than one or two color only.

Wonderful way to repurpose those T- shirts or any scrap knit. I pinned this post to spread word of your work on Pinterest. When I can pause from making my aprons, I look forward to relaxing and having some fun with this project. Thanks for the great idea.

Hi! lovely! can you also knit it? thank you!

  14. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Raya, of course you can! Just make sure to use very large needles. I havent tried knitting with t-shirt yarn but I have knit with sheets and the results are great, producing actually a nicer feeling fabric than with the crochet. So give it a try, but do keep in mind as far as I know knitting generally takes more yarn for the same sized result. all the best!

I would like to make blankets with tshirt yarn. I tried about a year ago and it was more rug like. I cannot shake the feeling that a blanket is possible. Any tips?

  18. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Ginger, I guess it depends on what you call a blanket! The nature of t-shirt yarn is that it creates a fairly stiff fabric, so maybe its no so ideal for a blanket. Of course, youll want to use the thinnest yarn you can, and maybe use a larger hook that you might usually, that will certainly help. How about going for something that might be called a bed cover as opposed to a blanket? That phrase snug as a bug in a rug actually refers to a bed rug the kind make by colonial Americans! all the best, would love to hear how it goes!

how washable is tee shirt yarn? I’m just concerned that when I go to wash it I’ll find an unraveled mess in my washer but I love the idea

I honestly havent washed the items Ive made much to vouch for durability, but certainly anything washed on a gentle cycle will be just fine. Jersey fabric is such a tight knit its virtually impossible to unravel it, try cutting up a t-shirt and do a test yourself! all the best.
