Crocheted Rag Rug From Sheets In Progress!

Crocheted Rag Rug In Progress

At long last we’re back into the crafting, and a crocheted rag rug is in the works! I always find that after a creativity/craft free hiatus, the first thing I always grab is a crochet hook, (in this case a 9mm hook) especially a chunky one that will help me make something fast! So those balls of sheet yarn that I made before Passover and posted about here, have finally come to use. Now the problem is I need some more sheets to continue this rug, as these rugs require really quite a few sheets. This one now measures 75 cm acrosss, and I’ve already gone through about six twin sheets and two pillowcase! Yes my friends, those last three purple rows (just inside of the two blue rows) used up one entire twin fitted sheet! I guess I’m gonna go see what else I can find in my linen closet……since I’m planning on a rug that measures about 100cm or even 120cm across. If you ever come across king sized comforter covers, those are the perfect size for making yarn and using towards the end of your rug to get at least a few good rows in one color!

Now I should add, that with the exception of the row of solid orange, all the sheets used here were very thin polyester (or something) sheets so this rug is quite a bit lighter than the last one I made with cotton sheets. One word of caution when using a variety of sheets, make sure to rip (or cut) the thicker sheets into much thinner yarn, or it becomes way too difficult to crochet with using the same size hook as with the thinner sheets. This happened to me and I had to tear out part of my work. Not to worry, it was only part of a row.

That’s all for now, I’ll let you know when the rug is finished, though once it starts to get on the big side it one row around takes forever, so no promises on when I’ll make it to the end. Not to discourage you, crocheting rag rugs is a great way to up-cycle old sheets and make a fun machine washable rug for any room!

thanks so much Sarah, though I cant say I really planned it, how the sheets actually look once crocheted is always a fun surprise. Wish me luck in finishing it, thats the hard part!

I love the frugality of this idea. And, I love that frugal, in this case is beautiful.

I have to say looking at this crochet rug brought back some sweet sweet memories of my great grandmother. I so remember her sitting in her rocking chair and doing crochet rugs out of just about any scrap materials. Thank you for sharing. Anxious to see the end results.
    It’s beautiful!

Thanks so much, and its wonderful to know that Im carrying on a tradition from the past, even though crocheting with rags seems like something so today!

This looks amazing, and I plan on making myself one over the summer 🙂 I shall be spending a lot of time in charity shops looking for old sheets and duvet covers at good prices.
I was wondering what size of hook you use for the sheets. (So I can go out and buy one that’s not too big!)
    Thanks 🙂
I’m looking forward to making one of these!

Hi Mary, I used a 10mm, youll have to google that to convert it to a US size. Ive found that this makes a nice tight rug. I use larger hooks for something smaller, with a project using a 15mm hook coming up next week, or maybe even tomorrow, gotta photograph it! So stay tuned and would love to see your progress!

    Thanks 🙂
I’m in the UK, and bought a 12mm hook today 🙂
Can I ask what kind of stitch you are using? (is stitch even the right word?)
I seem to have started one a whole lot looser than yours! I shall unravel it and have another attempt some time when I’m not so asleep 😀
    Thanks

    Hi Mary,
I used a simple single crochet (US terms) on my rug, with a 10mm hook. For the 12mm hook, youll have to experiment with what sheet width will give you a tighter result.
You can choose to single crochet in both loops, or just in the back loop as I did in a previous rug to give it more texture. All the best!

    Thanks 😀
My rug is coming along nicely… Although I dread to think how long each row is going to take when it gets big.
How do you make it so it doesn’t wrinkle? I’ve done one row of single into the back loop, then the next row is single then chain (back loop again after reversing direction) then just singles, then single-chain again, etc… but I’m getting wrinkly bits. I think it’s because it’s gone too big too quickly, but I don’t work out how to do it any other way so it’s not wrinkly…

Hi Mary, On the rug I just completed I also had a problem with the wrinkles, so as soon as that starts to happen, crochet rows without increasing, and when the rug starts to cup a bit (from lack of increases, so start increasing again, but maybe just every other row. all the best!

    Cool 🙂

Youre welcome, just play it by ear, stay calm and everything will work its way out…..if not you can always block it after youve finished. I find that after washing the rug it needs to be played with a bit to get it flat again, but its just a matter of a few minutes.

my gramma made these rugs yrs ago to compliment her country antiques & collection of teapots . she got me pstched for crafts as a small child . she also turned me on to rummage sales / thrift shops where she got mat’ls & collectables . a life long good habit of mine . there are tons of nicely worn linens in the thrift shops . i also buy old afghans & recycle the yarn . it’s so exciting to get $ 25 worth of good yarn for $3 !! tthrift shops now are getting a boutique atmosphere.
