Finger Knitting At Long Last!

Finger Knitting

I’m so happy to report that at long last we have given finger knitting a try and our first attempt was a huge success! The truth is, I sort of unintentionally craft starved my daughter on account of my busy schedule and her recent lack of enthusiasm (boo hoo) for crafting. But then today, she started to work on an old embroidery kit that’s been hanging around and lo and behold asked to do a project! Phew!

Honestly I was a bit sceptical if finger knitting would interest an already very experienced 10 year old crafter, but having read so many blog posts about children who just couldn’t stop finger knitting, I figured it was certainly worth a try.

Finger Knitting in Progress

I left the room and told my daughter to call me when she had something substantial, and I was really surprised to see this long snake not long after, and a very content girl to boot! I have a feeling the boys will want to give it a try too, which would be great of course. This is the perfect activity to do while listening to a recorded story or just hanging out on a lazy summer afternoon!

In case you don’t know how to finger knit, there are now many many sources on the internet, and you can decide to knit with either three or four (like we did) fingers. I learned how to finger knit in order to teach my daughter by watching this video. Oh and by the way, the chunkier the yarn the better, we used some crafting yarn I’ve had since I was a kid (no kidding!) and it’s called “rug yarn.” Enjoy!

Have you been able to make things with the finger knitting? I feel like there’s only so much ‘garland’ we can use around the house…I would love some ideas! Thanks.

Thanks Jules! Not only did my unintentional craft starving work on my daughter who loves crafts, it also worked on my 8 year old son who usually isnt so enthusiastic…..but out of his mouth came yesterday:
but i havent even drawn or done any projects lately! Yippee! Oh and boys got even more intense about the finger knitting than my daughter, like really obsessed, so very happy about that!

I have one question…. what do you do with the loops when you want to stop knitting but then come back to it later?

That is a very good question, and one we certainly faced ourselves! We just removed the knitting carefully and set it aside and my boys were able to put their fingers back into the loops and continue as long as no one touched their work. One could find a very thick dowel and slip it into the loops, but I dont think its necessary, as the loops are big enough that they dont unravel easily. All the best!

You could probably make a really long chain and then use it to do a chunky arm knitted blanket
