Mosaics From Beach Combing Treasures!

Mosaic from beach finds

Yesterday we returned to one of our favorite little beaches on the Mediterranean Sea, and I while I was expecting to find a bunch of nice shells as I had previously, this time I was pleasantly surprised by a huge collection of sanded (literally) ceramic tile pieces! There I was looking for shells when all of a sudden I see small pieces of pink and blue, and so of course I couldn’t resist collecting a bag full, until darkness put an end to my obsession!

While it’s just a bit difficult to tell from the photo, the ceramic pieces have smooth edges just like beach glass, and I think they’ll make a fantastic mosaic— a mirror frame would be a safe choice, but I think I’m going to go for a table top or a mosaic picture of some kind. I haven’t made any mosaics in years (well, almost nine to be exact!) and I think the time has come to get back into one of my craft loves from the past! Certainly those boxes of broken dishes and mismatched tiles in the attic would be happy to see the light of day, and I know my kids would enjoy the process too!

Wish me luck in fitting my creative dreams into my currently very busy schedule……but when there’s a will there’s a way, right? Oh, and if you’d like to see what those mosaics that I did nine years ago look like, and get inspired by lots of artful mosacis by other crafters, have a peek here.

I have been collecting such bits and pieces for years from our beaches here on Santorini (Thira). You got some good ones there, have fun. I have never done anything with mine.

Hi Debra, So maybe well both do something with ours, sooner than later? Of course collecting them is a joy too! All the best!

Hi Helen, Thanks so much, just took a quick look at your site and must visit it again….i have loved mosaic making for years, though havent done much of it lately as my crafting interests have become even broader. I still have boxes of broken pottery though in the attic waiting maybe for a stepping stone project with some local kids or who knows…..I have often dreamt of doing mosaics with tesserae like yours, or possibly even the gorgeous glass tesserae, but never quite got beyond the dreams as the expense of ordering the supplies was daunting.
Maybe the best thing at this point would be just to come to Greece and learn, Ive never been and it is calling me!
And by the way, you must try to get to Park Guell, I was there 2 years ago, and was soooooo surprised by all the inspiration beyond those famous benches, it is truly fabulous! all the best, and stay in touch! Sara
