Sukkah Lanterns From Recycled Soda Bottles….In Progress

Sukkah Lanterns From Recycled Bottles

Recycled soda bottles can make great lanterns, either to hold battery operated tea lights, or to hang as is, as Sukkah decorations. While I haven’t actually figured out how I’m going to use mine, I am planning to make as many as time allows and then possibly hang them around a large ring, or in mobile like groupings, we’ll see!

I do think that the lanterns looks stunning as is, though I may add some of the gold coin fringe I mentioned here, as always I struggle with my modern vs Moroccan/crafty aesthetic!

You’ll Need:

  • Recycled plastic soda bottles
  • good scissors
  • tissue paper
  • white glue mixed mixed with water
  • a metal hole punch
  • wire, string etc. to hang

How To:

Cut off the top portion only to make a lantern with a bottom, or cut off both the top and bottom portions of the bottle to make a cylindrical lantern.

With a brush, apply your decoupage medium or glue/water solution to the bottle, and lay the strips of tissue paper over the glue. Go over the tissue paper with a brush dipped in more glue, and make sure that the tissue paper is saturated. Proceed around the bottle and set aside to dry. Brush with a top coat to seal and create a better adherance to the bottle. Punch holes around the rim as needed for attaching string or ribbon for hanging lanterns.

I just realized that one can also make lanterns using my Recycled soda bottle packages idea, which would also be great mixed in with more translucent tissue paper ones. Enjoy!
