Connecting As You Go Crocheted African Flower Hex, And A Change Of Heart…..

Crochet African Flower Hex connect as you crochet

I’ve been wanting to try the technique of connecting granny squares or hexigons as you go for quite some time, so a huge batch of yarn that I purchased in the United States this summer certainly left me with no exucuses, except of course for lack of time! I shared with you a while back my test swatches, and from those swatches I chose to make a blanket using the African flower hex……so I started experimenting with connecting methods.

As you can see here, when one chooses to do the last row in different colors and connect as you go, there is a little bar of color at the join, which makes an already busy situation a little too busy for me. So my sample sat and sat while I was busy with Sukkot preparations and celebrations, and when the holidays were over I had a realization. The African flower pattern in just not working for me with the colors that I chose. Yikes, why did I choose those colors anyway, what was I thinking? Why not the pinks and oranges and apple greens that I love?  Well dear readers, it’s way too late for regrets, and with a suitcase full of yarn I just had to come up with a solution.

Ahhhhhh, then I saw a photo of a beautiful, simple hex blanket that I realized would work wonderfully with exactly the colors I had chosen that fateful day in JoAnnes……and so the African flower hex has been put aside for another project, and I’ve started a new blanket that is oh so lovely and a joy to work on.

More to come! And the lesson is, never, ever, spend time making something that you don’t love! If it isn’t a pleasure to see it coming to life in your hands, then stop and re-evaluate, our creative time is way to precious to take chances.

    Beautiful work Sara!!
I used to crochet a lot, and for me connecting pieces was something I didn’t like to do.
It’s not easy and I think you did a great job!
