The Holy City Of Hebron, And The Gravesite Of Our Forefathers And Mothers

Marat HaMachpela, Building From Afar2

Today is the yahrzheit, hillula, (the memorial anniversary of the day of passing) of our dear Rachel Imeinu, one of the mothers of the Jewish people. Sooooooo, just like last year, my daughter and I boarded a bus for an 18 hour trip which encompassed all four holy cities in Israel, and included a visit to Beit Lechem (Bethlehem) to the gravesite of Rachel.

Let’s start with a photo journal of our visit to Chevron (Hebron) the gravesite of Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, Sara, Rivka, and Leah. As well as Adam and Chava (Eve). Rachel is the only one not buried here, but rather a 30 minute drive away, in Beit Lechem, where she has been visited for 3,000 years!

Marat HaMachpela, Side View

Our forefathers and mothers were buried in a cave, Marat HaMachpela, over which was built this impressive structure. Within this structure are large tombstones which more or less mark the placement of the actual graves in the cave far below.

Here you can see the grandiosity as one approaches……

Marat HaMachpela Approaching Entrance

……the anticipation builds as we climb the steps to the entrance. I had the special merit of walking these steps with another American Jewish woman that has lived in Israel for five years, but this was her first visit to this special place…..

Marat HaMachpela, main hall

The main hall is filled with a special air of holiness.

The tombstone of Avraham Aveinu, the Avraham…..taken through bars.

Marat HaMachpela, Guard to door to Rivka,Yitzchak

Our guards are allowed to smile….this one is stationed outside the locked doors which lead to the tombstones of Yitzchak (Isaac) and Rivka (Rebecca). Unfortunately there is Jewish access to this room only ten days a year, as it is used as a mosque. Non-Jewish tourists, or possibly Jewish tourists who aren’t obviously Jewish (proceed at your own risk!) can enter the mosque somewhere on the other side within the neighborhood of Chevron, though I have no idea if there is any security there.

Marat HaMachpela, Adam v'Chava

The palms which are said to be growing over the entrance to the cave in which Adam and Chava (Eve) are buried. I had heard about this spot many many times, but never actually had access to it, so this is a first for me! I thought it was in some secret spot, but it’s really right in the main hall.

Marat HaMachpela, From Afar

Goodbye, Marat HaMachpela, next stop Beit Lechem (Bethlehem) and the gravesite of our dear Rachel Imeinu, affectionately known as Mama Rachel, stay tuned!

Hi, I’ve been enjoying your blog since I made aliyah 2 years ago, and since you inspired me to try fennel (i left a comment thanking you for that way back when!). I am now writing for Israel365.com, a non-profit that sends out a daily inspirational Israel-related email to over 50,000 subscribers. Your photos are beautiful, and do a lot of posts about Hebron, and I am so pleasantly surprised to come to your site today and find gorgeous, unique shots of the kevarim (I never saw or heard about the greenery by Adam and Chavah’s kever!). Please email me if you would be open to sharing your photos (with your photo credit and link) on our emails. Thank you! Shulamit

Hi Shulamit, Great to hear from you. I would be happy to share my photos, is it possible to do so with a live link to my site?
    Thanks so much,

Thank you Sara Rivka! We give a live link to your site for the first few times we use your photos, but once we use a few photos, then we should/will make you a page on our site (which is much better for you – and also gives a link to your site). Also we post on our facebook page, and we would give a live link to your FB page. Does that sound okay for you?

    Hi Shulamit,
Great to hear from you. Why would a page on the site be better than a live link if I really just want people to visit my site? Is it possible to have both? Also, can you add me to the email list please so I can see what the email looks like, and enjoy it too.
    Thanks!
