Colorful Striped Crocheted Pouches From Upcycled Yarn To Make As A Set!

Crochet-drawstring-pouch-kidsA sweet 9 year old student of mine quietly asked me if I could crochet something for him, and of course a request like that, wow, I could not say no!  (Especially since I've been working with him on learning to express himself, so I just had to do it, just with no guarantee of when exactly.) For me, any excuse to crochet is a great one, especially since we were living in a war zone with all that entails. I didn't have any yarn on hand, and except for cotton yarn, I do not purchase acrylic yarn in Israel as I've had only bad luck with it. So, instead I decided to unravel that huge wrap I never wore, (made with Red Heart Super Saver) as well as the variegated scarf from ten years ago that I wore then, but would not wear now, and voila, I suddenly had a whole bunch of yarn to crochet with. I started working on crocheted pouches, as those are perfect for boys, especially now that they are in the season of collecting apricot pits that they use in a schoolyard game, yes, really!

I wasn't sure how the mix of black and the variegated yarn would work, but the results are something both playful and mature, and I actually gifted my student the third one, and kept these two that were intentionally made as a set. While he wasn't able to say more than "thank you very much" to me, his mother reported that he really loved it and his siblings wanted it too. I'm so happy I took the time to make him a pouch, he'll remember it always, together of course with the many many hours spent making crafts.

Okay, want to join the club and crochet a sweet gift for a friend or loved one? And maybe even unravel something you never use, or unravel a thrifted something? Let's do it!

You'll Need:

  • yarn, whatever works for you, I used worsted weight and a 5cm hook
  • t-shirt yarn for the drawstring, and some great looking wooden beads, that are the perfect touch
  • crocheted drawstring pouch pattern

How To:

Dimensions of my finished crocheted pouches: 14cm wide x 17cm tall (not including base)

Follow instructions linked to above, just note the following differences:

  • for these pouches the black stripe was made with 2 rows of sc because otherwise it would not show up enough given the dark colors of my variegated yarn. So either crochet 1 row of sc for the contrasting stripe, or 2, you decide.
  • for the poucheon the right in the photo I started the sides with one row of black, and then crocheted 5 rows hdc until the first stripe, so the set of three stripes sits higher than on the other pouch
  • I only crocheted 3 stripes in black and then opted to crochet the top portion in black, in the ouch on the right I started the black in the dc drawstring row, in the pouch on the left I started the black after the drawstring row, and I'd advise doing the drawstring row in black, just saying.
  • To make this set, because I was working with upcycled yarn I had many small balls, and could choose what color section of the variegated yarn to work with first, though of course you can do that too by simply dividing your skein into two or three or four. One pouch starts with the tan section of the variegated yarn, and the other pouch starts with the blue section, and my idea worked, though of course it all depends on the repeat of the variegation. Never mind, just crochet and have fun.

As you can see, you really can't go wrong with the placement of the stripes and how you choose to use your stripe color and main color, just wing it and see how it looks!

I hope you'll consider whipping up a bunch of these nice drawstring pouches, and even work way ahead to have them on hand for chanukah, which it the time of year when I use them for my family.
