Wow Them With The Perfect First Birthday Smash Cake

During the holiday of Succot we celebrated the first birthday of a precious little one, and while I didn’t do anything even remotely resembling a smash cake for my one year olds, a grandson is of course a whole new game, and I was able to convince my daughter to whip up this classic white smash cake, which was perfect with my cardboard with white outlines crafty theme. (Like a toy helicopter with a heart cut-out or cardboard balloons birthday wall decor.) And if you don’t have a daughter around to make a lovely cake, and like me you wouldn’t likely give such a venture a try, you can probably purchase a cake similar to this one, just DO make a fun number one from recycled cardboard and a white paint pen! Honestly dear readers, homemade feels like it is truly from the heart!

Honestly, I have to pinch myself as this lovely cake is certainly a new style direction for our home……and I couldn’t be more pleased! (The classic birthday cake in our home is a chocolate bundt cake with paper decorations on skewers.) Truthfully I did watch daughter create this from scratch, and in a pinch I could likely create something similar, especially for a beloved little one who needs fun birthday photos! Time will tell, and I’ve heard that folks don’t even put actual cake inside the cake, but rather just more frosting to make it extra messy, hmmmmm, that might even be easier, but no cake waaaahhh. Mind you the cake is now in the freezer to enjoy when the little one visits in another week or so, and I’m sure he will be glad that the cake is actually cake, especially when there is not pressure to perform for photos!

And that is all for now, and just by the way, I actually photographed this cake in our succah, and the hint of the white cardboard leaves wall hanging makes the perfect backdrop! Ah yes, and our little one year old did not actually attack the cake as some do, and his mother said “oh he is just like me, he doesn’t like mess!” And there you have it!

DIY Cake Stand Tips:

And P.S. you don’t need to have an actual cake stand on hand, I assembled this from a dessert plate on top of a large polka dot plate on top of a footed bowl turned upside down, but often just put the polka dot plate on top of an upside down bowl! And hot glue doesn’t really stick to ceramic or glass permanently, so if you need cake plates for an ocassion you can hot glue them together (no fine dishes though, please) and then peel of the glue the next day, which I have also done!

Alternately, I have also used white Ikea plant pots with a white Ikea plate, either salad or dinner size, for a large gathering with many tables. In that case, because the plate is sort of glass-like (the cheapest Ikea plate, like $1.25 here in Israel for dinner size) the hot glue was good for the evening and then easily removed. When buying items to use as centerpieces, do think about storage, and this idea, with plant pots that can nest and stack and very thin plates, you’ve got yourself a winner. And plant pots can always be used to hold tiny flowering plants for another ocassion, so go for it!

There are so many ways to make cake stands or elevate a cake or tray of desserts, just do consider whether there will be small children than can knock something over! Now that those gears are turning, your next celebration with a dessert buffet, or cake on the table, is sure to be lovely.
