Now is a great time to get started with crafting for Chanukah, and you might like to start with how to make fun cardboard dreidels with paper collage, as the results are cute as can be! Whether you’ll be doing this yourself, or with kids, either way, the results are festive when bright colors are used, and these dreidels can be used in so many ways come Chanukah: garlands, gift tags, cake toppers, napkin rings, wall hangings, as stand up shelf/sideboard decor and more. So grab some cereal boxes and colored paper, especially quilling strips, and give it a try. If you have some fun paper punches on hand great, but certainly not necessary! It was just by chance that I found the tiny gear in a storage box, and smiled at how very perfect it is for a dreidel that spins round and round. Okay, lets do it!
You’ll Need:
• cereal box cardboard
• glue sticks
• colored paper, including quilling strips for fun and ease
• scissors, a ruler, a pencil
• optional: paper punches, I used a 1″ gear punch and a 2″ scalloped circle punch

How To:
- Cut dreidels in several sizes from from cardboard, mine measure: large dreidel is 9.5cm/3/75 inches, yellow dreidel with gears is 7.5cm/3inches, an smallest dreidel is 5.5 cm/2.25inches in diameter.
- Add strips or pieces of colored paper, affixing with a glue stick and then layer more elements on top. Studying the juxtaposition of colors is very interesting indeed, and if doing this with kids talk about which color combos really work, and which are less successful.
- When covering just the bottom point you only need to be exact about making sure the paper is straight, as you’ll trim off the excess for a perfect triangle.
- Turn over and trim excess paper on edges.
- Make a bunch and decide a bit closer to chanukah how you’ll use them!
And just as a little glimpse at what two 4th grade boys did, with mine as inspiration! I’ll share a bunch of my student’s work next week, stay tuned for all that cuteness.

Okay, that is all for now, lots of chanukah crafting coming up in the next few weeks!
