How To Make Layered Origami Dreidels

Origami dreidels are quickly becoming an all-time favorite Chanukah craft, but what to do with them you might ask? Well friends, here is one fabulous idea to take your origami dreidels to the next level, and that is dimensional origami dreidels, meaning gradated sizes attached to one another such that the layers looks like they are floating! And while I’ve done this with bright colors, this idea could also look great with metallic paper or a combo of patterned and metallic, or even with papers you’ve painted art journal style! Okay, lets do this now so we can move on to other Chanukah crafts, (like paper candles, embroidery, crochet….whatever there is time for!)

How To Make Dimensional Origami Dreidels

Supplies:

• origami paper in three sizes, mine are 7cm, 10cm and 13cm square

how to fold an origami dreidel tutorial

• glue stick and hot glue gun

• wine corks

• heavy duty knife (like one shown below)

How To:

  1. Fold origami dreidels, one of each size per layered dreidel, and follow directions. Use a glue stick to adhere small sections that are not lying flat. Check out my post gradated origami dreidels to see all the dreidels that went into this craft.
  2. Using heavy duty chef’s knife, carefully cut wine corks into slices that are roughly 3mm thick and 6mm thick, without worrying too much about accuracy
  3. Using hot glue, adhere one 6mm wine cork slice to top middle of largest dreidel, add hot glue to top of cork slice and place medium sized dreidel to adhere. If cork slice is too low the medium sized dreidel leans forward from the top a bit, which we can avoid by placing the cork slice a bit higher than center.
  4. In the same manner, adhere a 3mm wine cork slice to the top middle of the previous dreidel and adhere the smallest dreidel. For placement of wine cork place before gluing, add dreidel on top and make sure cork isn’t peeking out!
  5. That is it, now make a bunch to have on hand for any number of chanukah crafts, and consider trying this with metallic paper, patterned paper, handpainted/stamped paper or even book pages!

How about gluing a skewer on the back and using as a cake or doughnut topper? Happy chanukah crafting!
