How To Make A Festive Cereal Box Fish Kids Craft

Fish are the sign for the Jewish month of Adar, which is coming up soon, and since the month of Adar also contains the holiday of Purim, all things fish are just perfect for Rosh Chodesh Adar and Purim, so let’s get fishy and learn how to make a festive cereal box fish, shall we? It is true, the 4th graders who made these were suddenly lacking quite a bit of crafting confidence so I had to hold their hand every step of the way, and I did cut out the initial shape, but sometimes that is what you gotta do so they don’t get discouraged and quit, yikes! Truthfully some crafts just have a higher success rate, and this is one of them, and you can then use these fish in a variety of ways by adding little signs that hang above or below the fish, or even making a platter that the fish sit on, maybe with some lemon slices? Okay, that sounds fun, so maybe I’ll have to give it a try, but in the mean time, lets make some fish!

Supplies For Cereal Box Cardboard Fish:

• cereal box opened at the seam, we use the non-printed side

• colored paper

• a ruler and ballpoint pen

• something oval to trace (optional), or make one to use as a template

• a glue stick and scissors

How To Make A Cereal Box Cardboard Fish:

  1. Cut out out an oval shape, leaving a triangle at one end for the tail.
  2. Cut out scales made by cutting scallop shapes from paper
  3. Glue a piece of paper to the tail portion and then remove excess by trimming from the back.
  4. Do the same for the head portion.
  5. Attach scales and then a fin on top. Attach a gill, an eye and a mouth.
  6. Use a ball point pen and ruler to make lines on the tail and fin.
  7. Add dorsal fins on top and bottom of fish (the kids didn’t understand that suggestion, so maybe we’ll add them next week, maybe not)
  8. Enjoy the adorable fish!

Now you can think about hanging your fish on the front door, or even decorating both sides and making it a stand-up fish. I think I’ll be putting this fish on a platter as part of a wall hanging that also includes a plate of hamentaschen, can’t wait!
