How To Make A Paper Clown Chain For Purim

With the festive Jewish holiday of Purim coming up in a few weeks, now is a great time to get started with the Purim decorations, and to learn how to make a paper clown chain for Purim or for any festive occassion! This is a great craft for all ages, as you can prepare the chain of dolls for little ones, and teach the older ones how to create the chain themselves. The chains of clowns can be made from relatively small 10cm tall dolls/clowns, as shown here, which are simple to decorate, or go larger or even extra large and go to town with clothing and fun details. The 4th grade boys in one of my after school crafting groups really enjoyed this one, and now I just have to figure out whether to use them in some way, or just send the boys home with them, as is, to hang on a wall. Lots of options, so lets get to it!

Supplies For Paper Clown Chain:

• colored card stock, mine is A4 size

• round stickers, preferably matte ones that can be drawn on, mine are 2.5cm diameter

• a glue stick and scissors

Paper Clown Chain Instructions:

  1. Cut A4 paper in half vertically and glue end to end to make a long strip of paper.
  2. Accordion fold the paper roughly every 8cm.
  3. Draw a doll shape on the paper such that the arms go to the edge, and, if using round stickers for the face, the head is at least as large as your stickers. If you are doing this with or for many children, you may want to make a stencil of the doll shape to use yourself or give kids to trace around.
  4. Cut on the lines and unfold your paper doll chain.
  5. Put stickers on head, and then decorate with tiny triangular hats, little ties, belts, you name it!

Enjoy this craft, and make a bunch. One could use them as a table runner under a clear plastic tablecloth, or decorate both sides and make them as a stand-up table runner by adhering skewers with flags here and there, and then sticking those skewers into kosher salt filled cups. I’m going to try this, so stay tuned!
