DIY Fruity Birthday Number Centerpiece

Mazel tov to my wonderful daughter, whose birthday is today! A big phew, because tonight we enter the somber period of the 9 days, on the Jewish calender, and if she had been born just one day later I would not have been able to make her festive birthday parties until 10 days later! For the past four years or so I have been making birthday numbers, which I use in a vase either on the table, or on the sideboard, though they’d be great anywhere. Sometimes I’ve made numbers in black and white, and then I’ve reused them for her younger brothers, though this year, since she loves fruit, I’m going colorful and fruity. And I just realized that she’d really enjoy a bunch of fruit themed life advice quotes, so I’ll be making a bunch of those somehow as birthday decor at well. Ah yes, and then there’s the chandelier to decorate, and bake the cake, or at least prepare the cake toppers, she is the baker, hmmm. Okay, I’m in a huge rush, with sleepover guests arriving unexpectedly, along with everything else, so lets get to it!

Making birthday numbers like this one is really much simpler than it looks, and of course, I’ve had practice, so start small with low expectations and improve over the years! This one would have looked quite a bit more polished has I used a fine line pen, but didn’t find one, silly me! Taking my own advice about not being too critical, and just getting on with it!

You’ll Need:

• watercolor paper (or cardstock)
• a pencil and a black fine liner, or even a black pencil
• markers, paint markers or gouche, whichever works for you, I used Posca paint markers since I’m in a rush, as I’ve already said…..
• A long flat skewer and tape

How To:

Pretty self explanatory, right, given the 4 steps seen in the photos above. One important note, after step 2 erase the pencil lines, and if need be, outline the number with a very fine line. In prevoius years I did not need to do this, but this year I did. Enjoy!
