Today Is Holocaust Remembrance Day

Holocaust-remembrance-day

Today is the very sad and reflective Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. As the sun sets on the possibility of speaking with a living Holocaust survivor, and to hear first hand about the unimaginable atrocity that let to the murder of 6 million Jews and around 400,000 non Jews, we must each take steps in our own lives to eradicate racism, discrimination of any kind, baseless hatred, and ignorance. Please.

Thank you for writing about it.
I am a survivor myself. and this Memorial day is hard as it is `standing` in the air. I think of my maternal grandparents whom i never met, my aunts [forever 17 and 19], the many other family members i lost nad never had the chance to meet, love and even `fight` with. I think about the great losses. At the beginning of March i participated in the “6th International conference of Women In the Holocaust”. In every conference we learn more, and never know enough. mirjam survivor

Thank you so much for sharing Mirjam. I am so sorry to hear about your personal connection to this tragedy which brings something so inconceivable a little closer to home.

In the 1990s, when the Holocaust Memorial Museum was being built, the library where I worked received a copy of their newsletter. I followed the construction process and the artifact acquisition process and the exhibit development process. I am not Jewish, and I have no connection to the Shoah. Yet, I firmly believe the words of John Donne: “Each man’s death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind.” Thank you for your thoughtful words. We all must always remember.
