A Visit To Fort York Toronto With Kids

Fort York Toronto Building

This past August we spent ten wonderful days in Toronto, Canada and one of our favorite afternoons was the one we spent on a visit to historic Fort York, which is located in downtown Toronto just on the edge of the Entertainment District, and just a hop, skip and a jump from our vacation rental. Fort York, was the fort that protected the town of York, later to be called Toronto, in the war of 1812, and we really enjoyed stepping into this little slice of history. And do visit in the summer if you can to enjoy period war music and lots of demonstrations on site. In the mean time, have a look at my photos, worth a few minutes certainly!

You can tour the grounds by yourself, or go on one of the guided tours.

Fort York Toronto Historic Officer's Dining Room

I just love the historic interiors, and look at that floor cloth!

This looks liike a Dutch still life, don’t  you think?

Fort York Toronto With City Skyline

The fort was originally on Lake Ontario, but on account of land fill to develop the city, well, it is now quite a few blocks from the shore. Love this juxtapostion with the Toronto skyline!

Fort York Toronto Period Costumed Soldiers

Ah yes, and soldiers who march, and fire cannons and guns, and even play music, really wonderful!

As a side note, visiting historic forts could be a great way to learn about Northern American history, as previously unbeknownst to me, there are quite a few of them. One of the most developed appears to be that in Ticonderoga, which I didn’t have a chance to visit though we were right there, but it looks really great.

Stay tuned for my next travel installment as we make our way into New York State!

Fort York, the birthplace of the modern city of Toronto, was established in the late eighteenth century by the Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada John Graves Simcoe to house a garrison of British soldiers, creating a secure location which would attract permanent settlers.
