Sock Hobby Horse For Costume

Want to make the cutest ever sock hobby horse for one of your little darlings? I made this one last Thursday night (rather than sleep, you know how it goes…..) as a part of my eight year old’s Mordechai HaTzaddik purim costume, and it was a major hit! I’ve been wanting to make a sock hobby horse using a broomstick for years, and once my son gave me the go ahead all I had to do was make it happen. Fortunately, there’s a great DIY from light blue grey, which is what I basically followed, though with lots of short cuts on account of needing to make this guy asap.

Sock Hobby Horse DIY

You’ll Need:

a men’s size sock
stuffing
yarn, preferably chunky
felt
chord or rope
jingle bells
buttons
a wooden broomstick

How To:

Follow the wonderful DIY here, but if like me you’re short on time, you can do all or some of the following short cuts:

hot glue the ears instead of sewing them on
hot glue the button eyes instead of sewing them on
hot glue the cuff of the sock to the broomstick rather than making a grooves in the stick to hold the binding in place
make a halter that has only one piece, instead of two, one less step and in my case the horse looked cuter without the second piece

Additionally, I attached the reins with hot glue to a loop which I attached to the one piece of felt halter, and used some hot glue to make some of the mane lie flat. I also used all the bells that I had on hand to give the horse a more royal look, with gold bells on the neck, nose and two especially good ones that jingled hanging from a string.

And of course, one needn’t wait until Purim to make a fun horse like this one, I’m quite sure that a DIY sock horse like this one would be welcome anytime!
