Assembling Your Crocheted Starburst Square Afghan, Yippee!

Crocheted Starbust Square Afghan layout

Remember all those filet crochet starburst squares I crocheted over the summer? Well winter is the perfect time to assemble the blanket, and of course who wants a huge bag of crocheted squares hanging out doing nothing? So I buckled down and wove in the ends, which really wasn’t nearly as painful as I’d anticipated……I told myself I’d do five a day, then one color a day, but ended up completing the whole task over two days.

And then, for the process of laying out the blanket! I will say, this project wasn’t planned color wise, I simply made squares from all the skeins of colored yarn I’d ordered last January, with no idea how they’d all work together! (I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it will all work out in the end, this crazy color combo!) Maybe not an ideal way to go, but without a source of quality acrylic yarn anywhere near by, this is what I had to work with! I got about eight squares from each skein of Coats & Clark super saver yarn, and now the task was to come up with a composition that works! You can see most of those squares in my post from July here.

First I ditched the variegated squares that I had crocheted thinking they might work, but they’re too busy. Then I simply set about to make rows and columns with random placement and the colors spaced apart from one another. Ta da, I think this works, now on to joining the squares, stay tuned!

Oh, and if you missed the link earlier on in this post, here is the pattern to make a filet crochet starburst square. And a reader was inspired by my pattern to make an entire baby blanket from just one square— take a look at the crocheted starburst baby blanket too!

I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I started making these squares (thanks for the pattern) and I love how they came out. I consider myself to be a beginner so I’m needing help on how to get them all together.

HI Sara…I just saw it! I love it. I am thinking about doing this for my brothers blanket. He loves the Dallas Cowboys so I purchased the colors and plan on making him this. Thank you so much for sharing the finished project. It looks amazing. I really do love the starburst filet pattern. It works up quickly and it’s great for a beginner. What size hook did you use for your filets??
