Simple Filet Crochet Starburst Square Pattern

Crochet Filet Starburst Square

Here’s a super simple yet quite lovely fillet crochet/granny square star burst, with just enough detail to make it interesting, yet simple enough for crocheters of any level to pull off. And, since there are no color changes that means a lot fewer ends to weave in!

I was inspired by the gorgeous blanket I saw here, which was purchased as a kit from a Danish yarn company Yarn Freak. I am so grateful to them for their amazingly gorgeous yet simple idea, and for the inspiration to finally make that crocheted blanket I’ve been dreaming of, but just couldn’t decide which pattern to go with! And the fun part is that the squares are attached by crocheting them together, first with a row of single crochet and then a raised row of double crochet, simple and really unique!

Simple Fillet Crochet Star burst Square Pattern:

American Crochet Terminology (as opposed to British terminology, which is quite different!)

Chain 4, join with slip stitch

Rnd 1: All stitches are worked into center of loop. Ch 3, 2 DC, Ch 3, 3 DC, Ch 3, 3 DC, Ch3, 3 DC Ch3 and join to top of first Ch3 with a slip stitch.

Rnd 2: Ch3, skip the next dc and dc in the last dc of the group from rnd 1. In the corner space: 2DC, Ch3, 2DC. DC in the next DC, skip one DC and DC in next DC. Repeat around and join with slip stitch to first Ch3 of round.

Rnd 3: Ch3, DC in next 3 DC. In the corner space: 2DC, Ch3, 2DC. DC in the next 3DC, Ch1, DC in the next 3 DC. In the corner space: 2DC, Ch3, 2DC. Repeat around and join with slip stitch to first Ch3 of round.

Round 4: Ch3, DC in next 5DC. In the corner space: 2DC, Ch3, 2DC. DC in the next 5DC, Ch1, DC in the next 5 DC. In the corner space: 2DC, Ch3, 2DC. Repeat around and join with slip stitch to first Ch3 of round.

Round 5: Ch3, DC in next 7DC. In the corner space: 2DC, Ch3, 2DC. DC in the next 7DC, Ch1, DC in the next 7 DC. In the corner space: 2DC, Ch3, 2DC. Repeat around and join with slip stitch to first Ch3 of round.

Round 6: Ch3, DC in next 9DC. In the corner space: 2DC, Ch3, 2DC. DC in the next 9DC, Ch1, DC in the next 9DC. In the corner space: 2DC, Ch3, 2DC. Repeat around and join with slip stitch to first Ch3 of round, cut yarn and pull end through loop on hook. Weave in the end with a yarn needle

Note: It may seem strange to a seasoned crocheter to only crochet a Ch3 at the beginning of each round (to mimic  a double crochet and a ch1), I found that if I crocheted a Ch4, the resulting hole created was too big. Now this could be a result of my yarn choice and crocheting style, so try both yourself if the initial Ch3 results in a hole that’s too small.

That’s it! If the pattern confuses you, so just study the photograph, that’s what I did to write this pattern! Make a bunch and make a blanket in the size of your dreams. Single crochet the blocks together, and then crochet another row on top of that, either single crochet, half double crochet or even double crochet— experiment and see what you like!

Youre welcome Angie, Im still plugging away on my squares and it hasnt even gotten tedious!

I have tried this twice following exactly what the pattern says, 3/4 sides come out perfect but the fourth side is always shorter than the rest. What could I be doing wrong? It seems as though it’s not getting the same on each side of the “hole” if that makes sense. Everything else is perfectly symmetrical.

Hi Jessica, so maybe try Ch4 at the beginning of each round instead of Ch3, due to the difference in the way one crochets, namely how much tension, even the difference of one chain could be throwing your work off.
(In my case, if I did a Ch4 I found that the hole was too big) all the best, hope that helps!

Hey, it wasn’t that, but I did figure it out, on my 3rd try at a square I stared really hard at what I was doing, and figured it out! Now I can get started on my blanket!!! 🙂 Thank you so much!

If I want to go past row 6 to make a baby blanket, do I continue working as the pattern states?
I tried it that way but the square started to get distorted. Maybe after it reaches a certain size too many stitches were added? Not sure how to fix it.

  10. Sara Rivka Avatar

Yes, continue working as the pattern states, for example, Row 7: Ch3, DC in next 11 DC, in the corner space 2 DC Ch3 2 DC, DC in next 11 DC.
I wouldnt think that the square would get distorted, but you could try fixing the problem by only crocheting 1 DC Ch 3 1DC in each corner, though that might be a little strange.
Very often large projects just need blocking to make them the desired shape, and that could be your solution, or possibly youre using a hook thats really too large for your yarn and so the stitches are tight enough to hold the shape. all the best!

I’ve never done any blocking before but will definitely try it for this blanket.
The first time I tried the pattern I continued it as you stated but I the corners seemed to stick out more the the sides. Not sure blocking would have fixed that. Second time I followed the pattern to a certain point (row 10 or so) and then alternated rows where one row had 1 dc ch 3 1 dc and the next would have 2 dc ch 3 2 dc in the corners. It came out much more squared.
Not sure if it’s the pattern or the the way I crocheted but it looks better now. I’m on the last row of the border. Can’t wait to see it after it’s washed and blocked. 🙂

Interesting modification, so glad that it worked for you! How many rows did you do? Sounds great!

There’s about 25 rows plus the border. I’m blocking it now which you can see here:

WOW, it looks amazing! love that border too. Would you be able to take a photo of it on a white background so that I could share it with my readers, together with a pattern? Its a real winner, and I know so many that would love to make it…….it could also be a great pattern for a charity blanket for newborns! And infact Id love to make some myself for baby gifts, hope to hear more about how you did it!

have you thought about a picture instructional tutorial???
im a visual learner and its really super hard for me to just read a pattern and try to picture where im suppose to be at or what stitches are suppose to look like.
i tried this and i got super confused after the first corner 🙁

    Sara,
I am a begginer crocheter. Thanks for sharing yor pattern…I just finished it… I am thirll to let you know that this is my VERY FIRST GRANNY and I am loving it.
My only issue is after ch 3 there isn’t that extra space like inthe rest of the granny. I might just tried to add an extra chain ( chaining 4 instead of three to begin the row) is that something that would make sense?
I will give it a try and see. THANKS A BUNCH for sharing your knowledge!!!

Thanks for sharing this pattern. I was wondering how to crochet it as a half a triangle and use two colors. Any thoughts about this?

  22. Sara Rivka Avatar

Great idea! Im sure you can find a half triangle granny pattern to make half triangles using double crochet and just adapt for the starburst pattern. If you find one would love to post it so do let me know!

Hello Dear Israeli Friend! You’re the very first from Israel and I’m so pleased to have found you! Your Pictures with all the colors are beautiful and I’m hoping to do it justice. I’ve only started today and its coming along very well. My colors are different from yours – just a collage of all the yarn I have left over from other projects but I think its going to be great for a child’s room. I have red, pink, white, aqua, yellow, blue, purple, and another sparkly blue (it has gold metallic threads woven in and then I have some navy that I plan to use for the edging. Thank you so much for posting your work. I’m looking forward to see everything you have!!

Lovely square. Thanks for posting this. I just did a test piece with some leftover yarn and did one row fewer as I was running out of yarn. Looks great after blocking and I am now tempted to crochet up some more from different colours and at least do a cushion cover, if not a blanket.

How large do the squares end up when you use the 4.5mm hook?

  31. Sara Rivka Avatar

They are roughly 7 square, all the best!

Thank you for this wonderful pattern. I am onto my fifth square but have a query…at the point where I join onto the top of 3 chain with a slip stitch I don’t seem to get as definite a hole as you seem to get. I’ve tried 4 chain but that doesn’t seem to make much difference. Any tips would be appreciated as it looks a bit strange missing a row of holes on one side!

  33. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Christine, Im sorry I really dont know what to tell you, but try using a larger hook with the same yarn, maybe that will make the work not as tight. all the best!

I love this shape. Not sure though if you are aware that the square you have photographed has a whole section that is wrong. The quadrant from 12 o’clock to 2 o’clock has an extra DC in each row. It has 6.8,10, 12. All other sections are the correct odd numbers of 4,7,9,11.

  36. Sara Rivka Avatar

    Hi Britt,
I used red heart super saver yarn, which I believe is for a 5mm or 5.5mm crochet hook. all the best!

I have had the same problem with the beginning row not having the same hole. I have been skipping the first stitch after doing slip stitch in new row but the hole don’t line up. Did adding the extra chain work?

Thank you so much for this pattern. I have been crocheting for less than a month, and this is going to likely be the pattern I use for my very first blanket! I had been practicing with Hexagons of a similar style, but was disappointed with the area where the rounds were joined because it was clumpy, and not very clean looking. I started this pattern, and am SUPER happy with the results to far! Thank you!

i have done about 50 squares a couple of years ago and then put it aside. i had the pattern from spotlight but they no longer have it and i have lost it. so lightbulb moment look in ravelry and there it was. will let you know when i have finished, probably in another couple of years . it now can move to the ufo pile instead of the lost and what am i going to do with you pile.

Probably too late to report this, but the square shown in the photograph isn’t symmetrical. The NNE triangle has 1 stitch per row more than the others. That may be why people are finding that their squares are getting distorted as they grow bigger.
