A Colorful Succah Makes The Holiday Special!

My Succah Jerusalem 1

We’ve ushered in the Jewish New Year, and we now find ourselves smack in the middle of the busy Fall holiday season! So tighten your seat belts, we’ve got a lot of crafting to do here!

We have just over a week until Yom Kippur, and just four days after that Succos will be knocking on our door!  We will be celebrating Succos by dwelling in the Succah for seven days (pure heaven!) and then we move directly into the lesser known holidays of Simchas Torah and Shemini Atzeret! Phew!

In case your head is already spinning, let me focus you a bit: Get to work on your Succah plans and decorations now! A Succah is a great place to experiment with bright colors and bold patterns that you might be afraid to use in your home, so have fun and pile on the color!

Today and tomorrow I’m going to show you a few photos of some of my own Succahs in the past. I hope you’ll be inspired to make your Succah something truly special this year!

Sukkot always sneaks up on me. indeed one of my favorite holidays. we definitely need to get started on the decorations. I really like the ones you have posted before especially the curling paper one (featured in your banner). here are some of our Sukka decorations from last year: http://www.matzosoup.com/2008/10/sukka-decoratio/

All of these succahs look so amazing that I would almost hate to take then down. I will post about your post & link over to you shortly. In the post about the plum & apple centerpiece…is that mini-challah? Please excuse my ignorance if this is not a correct name for it. I would like to see more about them. They look wonderful. We have made our first batches of challah, one in a long braided loaf, and then round ones for Rosh Hashana. 3rd grade waldorf homeschoolers would really find some of your posts useful. You should make sure to tag some “waldorf” or “waldorf 3rd grade” or “waldorf” & “jewish holidays”. This would make you come up when they search for 3rd grade Hebrew culture ideas.

Thanks Jenn. Yes it’s always a bit sad for me when Succos is over, as I really enjoy our Succahs! The photo was taken of a catered meal,
but yes those “rolls” one per place setting were quite lovely though huge! Much more like mini challahs, as you’ve noted. All I can tell you is that they are baked in individual pans and thus the dough rises up, not unlike a muffin. Thanks for the Waldorf tip. All the best!

Have you seen these paintings for the sukkah? They are original designs reproduced on waterproof canvas. They’re beautiful and really big. They set a beautiful backdrop for the sukkah. http://WWW.Leatsilvera.com
