Friends, there are truly quite a few ways to use plastic bags as DIY art supplies, so please don’t toss them! Plastic bags are a huge problem and have been outlawed in many places worldwide, though they are still unfortunately plentiful in Israel and even in areas where they’ve been outlawed, so lets at the least use them for crafting! Cutting up the bags also helps them break down and they are less problematic, so even if the craft and the tiny pieces go in the trash, that is preferable.
Crafting with plastic bags also helps raise awareness, in my case with the sweet 25 or so 3rd, 4th and 5th grade boys that I craft with! I get them to save certain items and bring them from home, and now it will certainly be colored plastic bags so we can learn how to make pom pom fruit from plastic bags! I only had red on hand when I made these fruit pom poms, but yellow is also plentiful, with some green and pink and maybe even orange here and there.
Plastic bag pom pom fruit can be great hung as a mobile in a child’s room, used as party decor for a fruit themed party, or of course made to celebrate Tu B’Shevat, the Jewish new year for fruit bearing trees! They truly are adorable, and certainly something one can keep on hand to pull out in a pinch, I think they’d make great cake toppers as well. And come to think of it, how about making an adorable DIY baby mobile and gift it together with any number of popular baby items. Okay, lets make some plastic bag pom pom fruit, because truly the possibilties are endless!

You’ll Need:
- plastic bags made into plastic bag yarn, “plarn”
- some straws for the stems, paper of course, these plastic straws from Ikea are now outlawed
- green paper
- a hot glue gun
- a tutorial for making plastic bag pom poms here
- fishing line or thread and a needle for hanging
- want a cake stand? simply place a plate on top of an upside down bowl!
How To:
Make pom poms and then attach straw stem and leaves with hot glue.
Note: for fruit you will need to make your pom poms quite dense. I’ve realized that the method shown in the link isn’t really all that great for dense pom poms and would recommend the pom pom method using a doughnut shaped piece of cardboard, more work but likely more efficient in the end. I’m going to try that out so stay tuned!
Even if you only have time for two pom poms, this is truly an adorable centerpiece for any occasion! And yes, just turn a bowl upside down, place a salad plate on top, and voila, a mini cake stand/display stand is born!
