Tonight we usher in the saddest day on the Jewish calendar, T’isha B’Av, which includes a 25 hour fast for all healthy adults, together with a day of mourning. With everything going on in the past few years, feeling the sadness is unfortunately so much easier as there is so much to relate to, and honestly that means that now more than ever is the time to sit with your kids, and talk about sadness, in context of today. A great way to have these conversations is together with an art project or activity, and these colorful candle jars are perfect for kids about 9 years and older, with such fabulous results. So take a minute to learn how to make “Remembering Jerusalem” candle jars, and whether you do this today, or down the road, I can promise you it is well worth it!

You’ll Need:
• recycled glass jars, mine are coffee jars, cleaned and with labels removed
• tissue paper
• white glue mixed with water to make decoupage medium, or ready made decoupage medium
• a paint brush, medium sized
• gold tape adhered to cereal box cardboard to make strip covering neck of jar
• hot glue, to adhere the gold strip
How To:
Apply small amounts of glue to small sections of jar and gently lay cut pieces of tissue paper onto glue, trying to keep the pieces as flat as possible. With paint brush, gently go over each piece of tissue paper.
I just did this with two 3rd graders, and these were the results!
This is not a great project for small kids as it requires some exactness in order not to end up with a smudged gluey mess.
You can also try this collage on paper.
Okay, gotta run, connect with your kids through crafting!
