With Rosh HaShana coming is just over a week, yikes, now is the time to turn up the heat and get crafting and cooking/baking for the holiday! While you are busy making delicious whole wheat sourdough loaves possibly, or maybe a Moroccan salad or two for the simanim, like Moroccan carrot salad and Moroccan beet salad, why not have a fun craft on hand that can keep the kids occupied and excited? Introducing how to make bookmarks for Rosh HaShana craft, something that could also be given as a gift, tucked into a book or into a Shanah Tovah card! I did this craft with a group of 4th grade boys, whose results I’ll share shortly, and they loved it. Okay, lets do it!
You’ll Need:
• wooden bookmarks, or cut some thin balsa wood into bookmark shapes without the rounded end
• tassels, mine came with the bookmarks
• colored pencils (markers do not work well on wood, they bleed, plus this is a good opportunity to use the mostly neglected colored pencil!)
• fixative and varnish of some kind or just skip it (?)
How To:
- Show kids how to write the phrases in block hebrew letters.
- 2. Plan the design for each side of the bookmark, and pencil in the words and the designs with a regular pencil
- Go over the designs with colored pencils
- Add a protective coating on top to preserve the artwork and prevent any bleeding, water based products are not recommended over colored pencils, so the best idea is to use spray fixative and then apply an acrylic varnish.
