An Inspiring Container Garden Full Of Treasures!

Chava's garden window box2
A stunning mixture of plants fill this windowbox creation. A batik curtain is perfect!

Yesterday my children reported to me that our friend Chava has cucumbers and pumpkins growing in her garden! So this morning I decided to take a walk with my daughter, camera in hand, to see just what Chava had grown in the "garden" over at her place. I guess I haven't passed her house in quite a while, as there were so many new and wonderous sights to see!

Chava's Garden Hibiscus
A tropical hibiscus and a cucumber vine, both grown in containers!

As I was sorting through the photos I'd taken I was thinking about how one's garden can not only be a form of creative expression but also a reflection of their creative soul! Chava and I are both from California, and yet our gardens are so very different. She tells me how inspired she is by mine and I likewise!

Chava's garden is a blend of color and texture, organic and lush, unstudied and yet so naturally perfect! My garden on the other hand is more formal, relying on pure form as opposed to letting nature take it's course, a city designer moved to the country sort of look!

Chava's Garden Corn
There are beautiful flowers grown from seed, and corn!

The more I thought about Chava's garden, the more everything started to make sense. She is after all Chava (Eve)! Her very essence is rooted in the Garden of Eden. While I on the other hand am Sara Rivka (Rebecca), the first two mothers of the Jewish People, who were much more tent (home) oriented than garden oriented! So it makes perfect sense then that my garden would be more like a design extension of my home as opposed to a tropical paradise!

Chava's garden Peppers+sunflower
Green peppers growing in a window box! A sunflower, and morning glories.

Oh,and there's another oh so important detail that I left out about Chava, she is Chava BenTzion, midwife! Now it's all really making sense, she is a nurturer by nature and profession! So no one should be surprised to see tiny vegetables and flowers growing out of the most unexpected places!

Chava's Garden Sign
Beautiful and delicate purple flowers share space with a tiny tree. Chava's charming hand-painted sign requesting in Hebrew "please don't pick the flowers and the plants".

Chava's Garden PUmpkin A morning glory, a pumpkin! and seeds being started in small containers.

Chava is an amazing example of how one can make something wonderful from whatever one has been given. You might think that she has a small plot of land or even a courtyard. In actuality the tiny corner of the world that Chava has transformed into her own mini Gan Eden, is nothing more than the walls of her old stone home that border on a small alley! Want to see what it looks like?

Chavas Home and Garden Here it is! Chava's home and garden, surprised aren't you?

So, that's the story of my morning walk, and the pure happiness I felt while discovering with my daughter all the treasures to behold in this tiny garden. And I really enjoyed writing this blog post because for once I got the chance to mostly talk about someone other than myself! How refreshing!

Do you have a story to tell? I'd love to hear it! Send some good quality photos and we can work together! Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Wow, I’m blushing…
Sara Rivka, this is so sweet!!! I am so touched that my garden made you happy. It surely makes me happy as I find my self going out to look (even in the dark) and feeling an uplifting feeling as a result. I sometimes see others smiling at it and that makes me even happier. It’s lovely what you wrote and your perspectives on personalities being transformed into gardening style. It makes sense and I never really thought of it that way. Thank you!
One funny thing which fits right into the theme of your blog: a curious child broke one of the older sunflowers a few days ago (it’s heavy, seed filled flower was sagging low enough to grab) I cut it down and pulled out the root ball. Suddenly, I looked at what I was holding and it looked just like a broom. Long, straight stick with a bushy broom-end. I tapped off the dirt and called to my kids “come see the broom HaShem grew for you!” They came running and delightfully swept the whole walkway with the roots of the sunflower. They were so cute I felt better about the whole incident.

The thing I really like about container gardening is that it is compact and its portable. Now a days many plant enthusiast are already looking forward to having their gardening in a container to make their life simpler.
