A Happy New Month On The Jewish Calender!

Purim Rosh Chodesh Adar

Some of you may or may not be aware of this, but the Jewish people have their own calender. And we really do live by this calender except for things having to do with business and government operations which are run according to the Gregorian calender in order to be in sync with the rest of the world.

The Jewish calender is a lunar calender, and instead of having leap year, in which one day is added, we have a leap month! Every few years we add an extra month so that our holidays will occur at approximately the right time, season wise. The extra month that is added is always another Adar, which is great because Adar is a happy time, and who wouldn’t want two whole months of joy?

And guess what? Yesterday was the first day of the month Adar, which means that Purim is just two weeks away, yikes, so much to do still!  The first day of every month is a special day in itself, with a half day of school, and children wear white shirts to honor this day. My children came home from school with some fun crafts they made to celebrate the ushering in of this joyful period, and so I thought I’d take a photo to share with you, as many of you have expressed interest in learning some more details of my life in Israel.

Wishing you all a new month full of blessings and joy!

Quite interesting. I knew that the Jewish Calendar is a lunar one, but I had no idea about a ‘leap month.’ Glad to be educated about that. And enjoy your 2 months of Adar! Do you have a specific greeting or saying for this month of joy?

Thank you so much for explaining the Jewish calendar. Why is it that the first day of each month is special with special clothes, etc.? Do you know or is it just custom? Just curious.
