An Eighth Birthday Party Made With Love!

Birthday Party, 8th Details From

We are now in the middle of the “nine days” a period of mourning on the Jewish calender, which culminates on Tisha B’Av, the saddest day of the year and a fast day, marking the loss of our Holy Temple. Fortunately for my daughter, she was born just before the “nine days” otherwise we would not be able to celebrate on her actual birthday, since parties and happy occasions are not appropriate now.

So just before the nine days, we made a family birthday party, a birthday party made with love!  A crown cut out by Mom and colored by siblings, our classic birthday bear cake, a handmade present from Mom in a box decorated by siblings, special cookies, and the dining room chandelier decorated for the festivities.

The table was covered in a bright red duvet cover (sheets make great table cloths!) with a cute matroyshka doll pattern, I made a centerpiece with a striped Mexican basket filled with my paper flowers, and we ate pizza (a semi treat) and salad. A very nice time was had by all. Phew.

So my friends, your next birthday party doesn’t have to look like it came from Martha Stewart, that might not only be very difficult, but require many days of preparations! My humble advice (to myself as well) is to make a birthday party that looks like it came from Creative Jewish Mom!

And by the way, as I was cleaning up from the party and lamenting over throwing away three pizza boxes, miracle of miracles, I noticed that the clean ones could actually be used for a fun project! Come back on Monday to see what we did, and if you order pizza in the next few days with octagonal boxes, so save the lids!

Sounds like a perfect kind of birthday party to me! Glad your daughter was born before the nine days (and thanks for educating me on the Jewish calendar as I had no idea!)
Alas, we don’t get pizza as I have to follow a wheat-free diet, but I still can’t wait to see what project you’ve come up with x

All the best! Sorry to hear youre on a restrictive diet, but at least now there are so many people in it together that one can certainly find great recipes to meet your needs!

Hi Sara Rivka! I’m loving your blog, and I check it every day, as much for your great ideas as for your fun, upbeat attitude. I’ve tried some of your ideas with my kids, and we’re loving them, but the cardboard-box-little-person became a red truck with my four year old son! (He’s planning an entire fleet of trucks now) I’d love to see in the future some Jewish themed children’s room decor ideas, such as cute aleph bais signs to replace the manila paper choo choo trains they bring home from school.

I love your home-made birthday party – they are the best! It would also be so much more special for your daughter and for her siblings that the family worked together just for her. My daughters party is still a couple of months away but the list of things we are going to do at her party is growing! The latest added is having the guests decorating cupcakes – which we have done at one of her other parties, and is lots of fun, but I am loving the look of those cookies.
    Thanks for sharing,
    Sarah

Thanks Sarah! Ive seen parties where they decorated cookies too! And a crown for everyone to decorate would be fun too! All the best!
