Dip Dyed Paper Craft

Dip dyed tissue paper close up

Can you imagine making gorgeous dip dyed patterned papers like these at home, even with the kids? Well, you can, because I actually made these two samples of DIY dyed papers when I was a kid, if you can believe that? I found these while doing some cleaning out at my mother's home a few months ago, and it wasn't until I learned about the tissue paper tie dying project that I realized how I did these so many years ago. I have a feeling this technique is derived from something Japanese, so I"ll have to check that out!

These are actually much more successful than the project we did recently because the dyes that were used were much more intense, and the paper is something akin to rice paper, a thick version of what we might describe as tissue paper.

Whether or not you can find "thick tissue paper", and please let me know if you know what this might be, you can certainly use the folding techniques I used here together with tissue paper to arrive at these nice patterns.

As you can see, the striped paper was made by simple folding a large sheet of paper accordion style and then into sections until the finished piece looks like that on the left. Then the piece was dipped in yellow on one side and blue on the other. The other piece was quite simple folded down into a square, and the corners were dipped. That's it! Enjoy.

I hope you still check your site, I teach this every year to my fifth graders when we study Japan, you are correct this is a traditional Japanese paper dyeing technique called Shibori, I buy Japanese rice paper that they use for calligraphy, Dick Blick carries it online, it runs about $10 for 100 sheets, if you have an Asian store that carries things other than food you can usually buy it there cheaper.
