Recycled Toilet Paper Roll Wreath

Toilet Paper Tube Wall Art On Blue2

I hope you’ve been saving those toilet paper rolls because this project is fantastic! But I can’t take credit for the brilliant idea, that goes to my friend Tali the architect here, though this design is my own. I’ve had this one on my agenda for ages and I’ve been diligently saving those rolls, and now I’ve got something special hanging in my kitchen. Yippee!

And I’m slowly chipping away at the list of recycled materials that I suggested you save. And toilet paper rolls can be stored collapsed and bound together with a rubber band if you’re short on space!

This is a great project for all ages, and for those of you who’d like to get a head start on Succah decorations this would be perfect!

Toilet Paper Tube Wall Art On blue

My project is still in it’s “natural” state, but I’m considering spray painting it gold. Then I have a feeling no one will guess it’s humble origins!

You’ll Need:

  • recycled toilet paper tubes, or paper towel tubes, lots of them!
  • white glue or a hot glue gun
  • lots of paper clips, if you’re using white glue

Toilet Paper Tube Art How To

How To:

  1. Cut tubes into evenly sized rings. You do want the rings to be the same depth, so do take the extra time to measure! If you want to be a perfectionist, cut with a craft knife and a metal ruler.
  2. Start gluing tubes together. I used hot glue since it’s quicker, but I’d recommend using the white glue and paper clips method for kids. Use the paper clips to hold the pieces together as they dry flat on a table.
  3. I really didn’t have a plan so I decided to assemble flowers, and figure out what to do with them afterwards! You might want to actually design something first for more certain results. You could even plan your design on the computer!
  4. Run to the neighbors to see if they have some extra tubes, when you run out!
  5. Finish assembling your entire design and paint if desired. Hang and enjoy!

I love your wall hanging! I saw the original when it was posted to your Craft Sunday page and have been dying to do this project. But the 40-roll pack we had never left the cardboard tubes clean! By the time we bought more toilet paper, we decided to move (yaredah). So this is on hold until we have a new wall to decorate. I’ll get my family to save rolls for me, so I can do it right away!

I love having guests from around the world!

  7. Sara Rivka Avatar

    Hi Dena,
Yes, some of the rolls leave a bit of paper thats hard to get off, so I guess youll have to switch brands in the name of crafting!
Are you leaving Tsfat? all the best!

Oh! I am so mad I just threw out a whole stash I had of these!!!
This is so adorable, I didn’t even realize they were toilet paper rolls until I read the post!

What a great wreath, Sara! If you spray paint it gold, I hope you post that pic so we can see it all glammed up!
Love your step by step instructions – especially #4 – run to the neighbors for more when you run out! So I’m guessing by looking at this project that each flower takes at least 3 tubes, would I be about right?

  11. Sara Rivka Avatar

Thanks Margo! Ill be sure to show any changes to the wreath, for now Im enjoying it like this. Good guess, I cut each tube into 4 pieces of 5/8 each (which leaves a little spare) so youll need 2 1/2 tubes per flower. Id love to see what you do with this! I think its a great summer project for kids to do as an ongoing piece left out somewhere.

  12. Jenny Avatar

So fun! Those flower shapes are just gorgeous! How great would this be on a front door for a spring party?!

  17. Kristi Avatar

I love this! I could see it painted white or graduated pink that’s darker towards flower centers, then add a yellow button to the center of each. I actually cut paper towel tubes like this last year to use in making napkin rings for a ladies’ tea. I cut mine with a paper trimmer, which made it really easy to measure and cut at the same time.

  18. Sara Rivka Avatar

Thanks so much for commenting, thousands pass by and so its so nice to hear from a voice out there, especially from my native Bay Area! all the best, and enjoy this project!

  19. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Kristi, I thought of buttons too, but I think Ill try that next time or when I get tired of this one in its pure state! Love your ideas with the color and a paper cutter is a super idea for those who happen to have one! Would love to see the results if you make one, so keep in touch, and thanks so much for commenting!

Love this so much! Already started saving our rolls & told the kids & hubby that they have to help me save them. The kids were so skeptical until I showed them this blog post 🙂 I think I’ll make one for each bathroom 🙂

  29. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Tara, Thanks so much, what a cute idea! Though if your bathroom has a shower or bath in it I would recommend coating your work of art with varnish ( a few coats, sprayed on should do the trick) so it wont absorb moisture from the steam. All the best, and do send photos of your works of art!

Beautiful idea! From the moment I saw this I couldn’t wait to get my hands on some toilet paper rolls 🙂
Just did it with the kids and we all had a blast (if there was a way to upload attachments I’d send a pic).
We added sequins and spray paint simply because I needed to give the little ones more to do (since I did all the cutting and gluing for them..) but I like this in its original form best.
Thank you for this fabulous website!

I have made something similar…..I thought it was hard to cover the rolls with spray paint…I was using a dark color so just beware. It took about three coats of paint. It was also cold in my garage….so that might have been the problem.

  48. Sara Rivka Avatar

Thanks for sharing. Yes is is hard to cover some objects with spray paint, and several coats is usually needed for good coverage. Plus the cardboard may have been soaking up the paint a bit.

After I had glued with the glue gun, my flowers together (toilet paper rolls) …I spray painted the flowers after when I tried to pick it up it all came apart….I was not satisfied with the paint job so….
I repainted the flowers with a sponge with acrylic paint now I still have to reglue the flowers and hopefully now they will all stay together…

Hi Sara! I love your wreath/wallart! It’s really beautiful! I enjoy making wallart with TP tubes as well. This looks really nice & I have a large stash to use up! I noticed that some tp sticks to my tubes too, but I haven’t found an easy way of removing it. I just rub at it with my thumb until it’s gone. That’s time consuming & doesn’t always get all the paper off. Do you or any of your readers have a way of removing that left over tp? If so please share!
I enjoyed your site & am following you now. Please stop by my blog & check out some of my crafts & tutorial on making paper flowers!

Hi Bridget, Cant say I have any tips for removing the tp from the rolls, though so glad to meet you and hope youll join my linky party, opens every Saturday night my time…..Just took a look at your blog, LOVE your front porch and bringing all the houseplants out is great for them and makes the porch look fantstic. Im also quite a houseplant enthusiast, i have a category on my blog called container gardening: houseplants, and now that spring is here, Im starting to pay some attention to my outdoor container garden which is quite extensive and such a joy. Ive always wanted some hanging ferns like yours, but the weather here is just too dry and despite my green thumb they just dont thrive, though foxtail fern and asparagus fern do great. All the best!

Hi I love this going to try even though I have no crafty bone in my body. Did u use anything else to make it stronger not only to keep it’s shape but when u put it on the wall? What did u use to attach it securely to the wall?
    Thanks so much, love it!
    Heather

  63. Sara Rivka Avatar

Hi Heather, thanks, I did not use anything to make it stronger, and over time it did sag, so do try to find some more information on line how to make it stronger! I just hung it on a nail honestly. all the best!

I’m going to try to make a huge Peace sign. I’ve been saving my rolls for awhile now. Just an idea for some other old hippies. 🙂 PEACE Ya’ll!!!

  66. Sara Rivka Avatar

Go for it, just I would reinforce my tp rolls with a good few coats of varnish after you finish so theyll hold their shape. My wreath started to sag after a while as I recall, that was 8 ½ years ago!
The Martha Stewart show actually contacted me about coming on the show to do this wreath, or auditioning rather, but I live in Israel so I couldnt quite figure out how to put my life on hold
with little kids in order to go on TV……not to mention pay all my expenses.
