Date Palms And A Word About Dates

Date Palm

Most of you probably don’t walk out of your dentist’s office and see a date palm with tiny fruits forming, so I thought I’d share these photos with you from a recent trip to Rosh Pina, not far from my home in Northern Israel.

Dates Against Sky

Dates are a big part of life here in the Mediterranean, and we enjoy them in so many ways. I love to bake with sugar-free date syrup, know as silan, and a big dried date spread on a rice cake is a super healthy way to enjoy a little treat. Just be sure to buy the dates called Medjoul, they’re the best! Though do open them up before eating as they can be infested…..yuck!

Dates on a Date Palm

I can’t say that I personally enjoy eating fresh dates harvested in the fall, as it’s just unfamiliar to me, but I do love how they look, and we often buy a branch full of dates to use as decoration in our succah! When ripe they are golden yellow and just a large version of what you see in the photo here.

That’s it for your little peak into life here in the middle east, got some craft projects under way, but no time to photograph them! See ya soon!

I give a special thanks to God whenever I eat dates – that is the most divine food for me 🙂
It must be such a blessing to live in Israel.

how nice! can you share any tips on substituting Silan date syrup for sugar? i have seen recipes calling for fresh dates in lieu of sugar, but i do not yet have a food processor to finely blend them, so Silan sounds great and seems easy!
we enjoy Silan for my husband’s family’s traditional Sephardic charoset (they call it halayk). we are also new to israel and enjoying all the sites you describe as well! thanks for the great website.
    kol tov, shulamit

Hi Shulamit, Great to meet you, and welcome! So glad youre finding my site useful! As far as buying Silan, there are two versions, that with sugar added which is cheaper and more widely available, and that which has no sugar added, so do be on the lookout for which you prefer. I havent done too many things with silan, but I do use it in place of sugar for helping yeast activate in my whole wheat pitas, 1 tablespoon per kilo (though you could add more) and I sometimes make a stir fry granola for my kids which is simply rolled oats and any nuts you have on hand and a few tablespoons of silan, its delicious! I have also tried to get my kids to use silan in hot drinks, which was mildly successful since i dont really give them hot drinks with sugar. All the best, and here for any questions!

I really enjoyed your date article and how you endear to them. Sounds so delicious! I’ve never heard of the date syrup silan. Very curious. I’ll have to try to find some. Alway looking for something other than the processed sugars! Thanks for sharing.

Great, I would think that youll find silan at a natural foods store, just beware, some are made with sugar so if youre going for the healthiest version make sure theres no sugar added. Enjoy!

I love palm trees and get to enjoy them as my neighbour has a row of lipstick palms along our fence.
