Creativity With Paper And Yarn….An MP4 Player!

MP4 player from yarn and paper

When my son was looking for string and scissors yesterday, I assumed he was going to do some finger knitting, or cats in the cradle. So not long after, when he was walking around the house sporting his new MP4 (actually MP5, he informed me) player made from yarn and paper, we all just had to laugh! Especially love those ear phones. And as you can well imagine I was thrilled with this independant act of creativity.
Now the question is, how can I encourage him to do things like this more often? I think the key is to first of all have a running dialogue with your kids about all the creative possibilities out there, to collect recycled materials for crafting, and of course if possible to sit down with them, even once a week, and spend some time creating. Any wisdom you'd like to share?

I think you’re on the right track-do it yourself and they will emulate. My six are all very able with crafts/art/creativity because we did it a lot at home. I notice the difference when I teach art at our homeschool co-op. Sometimes I forget they are not all from art houses and over estimate class ability when planning lessons.

This is my first visit to your blog and as soon as I saw your son’s Mp4 it brought back so many memories of the things my boys used to make when they were smaller. It is such a joy to see how their little creative minds work. Lovely to see.
    Cheers, Anita.

I did a double take when I saw this photo! Just the other day, our 5 year-old Andre made a paper remote, complete with buttons, symbols, etc. Don’t you just love this young craftiness?!
