Introducing A New Series: Teaching Kids To Crochet!

Teaching Kids To Crochet

Now, for the first time ever, I’m embarking on a little blogging series here, called Teaching Kids To Crochet. Not sure whether it has been done, so figured I was a good candidate for the job!

It started like this: A friend asked me to teach her two daughters, ages nine and eleven, to crochet. I glady accepted the request thinking that at long last my own ten year old daughter might feel more inclined to learn. And yippee, my little plan worked! All three girls are well on their way to learning how to crochet after just two lessons, and my daughter is almost finished with her very first crochet project, and it looks amazing!

I have never actually taught anyone to crochet, so I was a little bit nervous, but fortunately these first three students are all quite talented and are learning very quickly, encouraging me even more to share our crocheting lessons with you, as well as some tips for teaching kids! Stay tuned for Lesson 1 soon!

Is age 7 too young to do this for girls?

Hi Ita, Give it a try, it really depends on the childs abilities and additionally how much patience and desire they have to practice to get it right. all the best!

    Hi Sara,
I sometimes crochet with kids in kindergarden. I’ll read your articles carefully.
I know that kids age between four and six years love to crochet with hands and they can even handle the hook and form some cords with it (I do a lot with this cords ;)). But single crochet didn’t work till now 🙂

Thanks Carmen! Yes, and even a seven year old may be able to single crochet, but not necessarily hold the yarn correctly, so as I said in the article, I would only teach kids when they can master it correctly, otherwise it may be harder for them to learn the right way later. all the best!

Great Ita, would love to hear how it goes, as dont know what minimum age to recommend, since it of course depends on the child. all the best!
