Oribe Gorge Sennicio Succulent In Bloom……

Container Gardening- Oribe Gorge up close 2013

It’s fall, and that means that my Sennicio oribe gorge succulent is in bloom once again, and looking I must say, stunning! One of the wonderful things about container gardening is nurturing and tending to plants over a number of years and enjoying the rewards in the form of blooming flowers. Now most succulents don’t produce blooms like these, so this little plant is especially near and dear to my heart. So near and dear that each winter I consider digging it up and bringing it indoors, as while it survives the low temps here, it’s not ideal. I’m thinking that if it doesn’t have to go through such a hard winter and recovery period, maybe it will bloom in the spring or even summer.

I actually have enough little offshoots that I’ve propogated in this planter to possibly dig up half the plant and leave the other half in the planter. Hmmmm, these oblong planters really do need a facelift and fall is a great time for that, never mind all that dirt I’ll have to sweep up, maybe I’ll get the kids involved too, ah yes, a little family project, now I’m thinking!

PS: One of the joys of blogging is actually having a record of one’s garden. I originally purchased this succulent not knowing that it blooms and boy was I surprised. I just looked back at my post from 2011, and am really surprised to see that this little plant produced a huge number of flowers, having come from the nursery just a few months prior. More reason to bring it inside when temps drop.

    Dearest Sara,
this moment for me is like autumn, nice days of sun and ugly days of fog.
I’d like to receive this cutting, it would be an international succulent, cool! I was thinking to send you some cuttings of my succulents too, because they can easily resist to some days of trip.
    Lots of love,
    Rosi

Hi, how did you know what this was called? I have one and no one knew what it was called. We waited three years for it to flower and still no one knew, including the UK succulent society. I stumbled across this and this is my plant! So at last seem to have found a name for it!

Hi Charlotte, SO happy to be of help. Honestly I was obsessed to find out what it was, as the flowers are amazing and it is different from other succulents. I basically googled a description of the plant and then poured through hundreds of photos
and finally find one source. I bought it years ago at a local nursery but never thought to ask what the name is in Hebrew, not that it would have helped. I take photos of my plants every year that they flower, so you can find many posts about these beloved plants, I have even drawn them in my journal. When temps approach freezing I do take them indoors, (i have 2 pots) and this past year they have been in a less sunny spot and no flowers at all.
Other years I have left the plants out most of the winter, and though they look terrible come spring, they come back with fresh new leaves quite quickly.
all the best, would love to see photo of your plant!
