I am so very very pleased with how these torn paper mosaic collages turned out, so I just had to share with you how to make an abstract torn paper collage with kids, as the results are precious and the process is so much fun (for most.) Personally I just love seeing how the colors play off of one another, and I comment about this to my students as they are making the collages and when they are completed. Making is just one part of teaching kids to enjoy art, talking about it is very important too! The group of students who made these are third grade boys, and there is always plenty to talk about in addition to the art as they are just full of questions, one big one being “how did you learn how to do this?” One boy told his mother “she thinks we know how to make things the way she does!” Too sweet, and I truly see their personalities in these abstract collages, which while perfect as is are actually the base for a bonfire sculpture we are making for the Jewish holiday of Lag B’Omer. Okay, get out the glue and the paper scraps and lets make a collage!

You’ll Need:
• cardboard circles cut from a box
• colored paper scraps torn into little and medium sized pieces
• diluted white glue and a paint brush
How To:
Show kids how to adhere scraps of paper by first painting a spot with white glue, then laying the paper onto that spot and then gently going over the top of the piece with the paint brush. Teach kids how to overlap pieces and create balance with colors that pop.
Enjoy!
