How To Make Quick Flag Pole Birthday Cake Toppers

Plan ahead in order to make adorable flag pole cake toppers like these in a pinch! My son was in yeshiva on his 21st birthday, and I almost forgot that we hadn’t celebrated his birthday as a family, until my daughter reminded me at about 5pm a few hours before shabbat, yikes! She made the cake and I quickly whipped up these cake toppers, my usual skewer flags, but this time with these fun pole climbers! Honestly, I had just planned to sit them around the rim or inner circle of the bundt cake I always make, but then realized that they could actually climb the poles, and bingo and truly fun cake toppers were born, phew! In all the hurry one character fell into the hole in the middle of the cake, filled with chocolate glaze, and that was part of the decor too. Okay, I think this one is quite obvious, but lets see what you’ll need to have on hand to whip these up in a few minutes.

Had I been able to find a black pen I would not have used the pink, but it actually looks fun in the photos. And with more time I would have maybe used a circular sticker, or diamond shaped piece of colored paper on which to write the initial and age, next time!

You’ll Need:

• little plastic men made to sit on edge of glass and hold plant cuttings in water

• colored/patterned paper and a permanent marker, or ideally round stickers for writing number on top of flag

• skewers

• foam clay or pom poms to make tiny ball on top of flag pole, i didn’t have time for that

So get yourself a few sets of these inexpensive characters and use them for part decor, as cake toppers or even sitting on the edge of a glass and holding a straw, or how about both?
