How To Grow Ponytail Palm In A Pot Outdoors

Ponytail palm is one of those very unusual looking plants that you can’t help but notice! This very plant sat at the back of a neighbor’s home for years and I always thought that I would love one too! Fast forward, that neighbor sadly lost her husband and made a discreet sale of her home and boarded an airplane to the USA without telling me, the neighbor who had just offered help with her neglected container garden. Of course I swooped in and rescued all that I could, well, everything basically, and now my own container garden has a bunch of new plants some of which are not in great shape, and some which are just fine, like this ponytail palm. I can tell you it is a hardy plant, as it was left out in wet and cold winter temps (not a lot of freezing days lately, but some) and it still seems to have survived quite well. I don’t recall passing by it and every thinking that it looked neglected, so ponytail palm is a good choice for a low maintenance plant!

That said, ponytail palm does not like freezing temps, and if it stays at my house forever (likely) I will bring it indoors when temps dip, and I might also put it under a covered area during winter rains.

I did repot this plant, and listened to instructions that say to only repot such that there is an inch around the base, as it likes to be root bound. In the previous pot the bulbous base had reached the edge of the pot, and had possibly been in that condition for years, not sure. Now that I’m tending to it, it can grow bigger, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Not every ponytail palm looks exactly like this one, but every ponytail palm should have fronds that arch nicely like these!

Ah yes, and since I do name some of my plants I guess I need to name this one, “pony” seems like an obvious one, I’ll have to give that some thought. Truthfully I only have two other plants with names, that are “cookie” and “baby”, so “pony” does fit into that cutesy, easy to remember theme.

If you are still reading, maybe I should share that we also gave our wet-vac Tinko floor cleaner a name, which is “Georgie” and I have to say I’m loving the name. And Georgie does a great job of doing a final clean of the tile floor on the patio seen here, wow! Okay, gotta run, happy container gardening!
